Magic Mushroom Grow Kit Instructions

Just received your kit? Every magic mushroom grow kit has its own setup procedure — some need an overnight soak, others need no soaking at all, only misting; some require a specific way to fold the grow bag, others a fridge step or a paper clip closure. So before you do anything: pick your exact kit below and follow the matching instructions. That is the one thing that matters in your first 24 hours.

We ship every order without paper instructions to keep our carbon footprint low — so this page (plus the video and PDF for each kit) is your handbook.

Universal basics (apply to every kit)

The setup is different per kit, but these three rules are the same for every magic mushroom grow kit we sell. Get these right and you have already done 80% of the work.

Temperature: aim for 23°C

The sweet spot for Psilocybe cubensis is a constant 23°C (73°F). The safe range is 20–27°C. Never below 20°C — your kit will stall. Never above 28°C — contamination risk goes up sharply. Room nightly temperature also counts. Read the full temperature guide or, if your room is too cold, use a thermo mat the right way.

Light: indirect daylight

Mushrooms use light as a signal, not as food. Indirect daylight in a normal room is perfect. Avoid direct sunlight (it overheats and dries out the kit) and avoid total darkness (the kit needs a day/night rhythm to fruit). Read our full guide on light for mushroom grow kits for the exact lux, 12/12 cycle and LED tips.

Hygiene: clean hands, clean surface

Contamination is the #1 reason a grow kit fails. Wash your hands and forearms with soap, clean your work surface, and only open the kit when you really need to. Read our hygiene guide before you start.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I see the first mushrooms?

Timing depends on your kit type and strain. As a rule of thumb, most kits show pins within 2 weeks, but some strains (Mexican, Burma, Supa Envy) can take up to 21 days. If nothing happens after day 15, your kit may be lazy, unhappy or sleeping — each needs a different fix. Read the full troubleshooting guide for the exact steps per situation.

My kit has green, black or grey spots — is it contaminated?

White fluffy stuff is mycelium (good). Green, black or grey patches are mold (bad). Black layers on mature mushrooms are usually spore drops — harmless, but a sign you harvested late. Avoid contamination by working clean.

What temperature should the room be?

23°C is ideal. The range 20–27°C is safe. If your room is colder, use a thermo mat correctly — but never place the kit directly on the mat.

My room is colder at night — is that a problem?

Yes. If the temperature drops below 20°C, even just at night, fruiting will stall. A thermo mat with a small air gap solves this. More about temperature.

When do I harvest?

Harvest just before the veil under the cap tears open. This usually happens 5–12 days after the first pins appear. Pick early rather than late — once the veil tears, the mushroom releases spores and potency drops. Full harvest timing guide.

How many flushes will my kit produce?

Most kits give 2–3 flushes. After each harvest you restart from the soaking step (specific to your kit type — see your kit's instructions). Each next flush is usually smaller than the previous one.

Can I store the kit before starting?

Yes, but only short term. Keep the kit sealed in the fridge at 2–4°C for a maximum of 14 days. Take it out about 1 hour before starting so it can come to room temperature.

I am an experienced grower — where do I go for advanced info?

For everything beyond ready-to-grow kits — substrate prep, PF-tek, liquid culture, spore prints — the Magic Mushrooms Spores category is a good starting point, and the Shroomery forum is the long-standing community resource.
