FreshMushrooms® Grow Kit Instructions

Applicable to all FreshMushrooms® grow kits (1200 cc).

Start cultivation as soon as possible for the best results. If you want to start later, store the kit in the fridge at 2–7 °C (14 days max).

The white substance in the grow box is mycelium — the root-like network of the fungus. The mushrooms grow from this mycelium. Its mould-like appearance is completely normal.

What's in the box?

  • Grow box with 100% colonised substrate and living mycelium
  • A plastic grow bag with micro perforations
  • One paper clip

  • About the grow bag

The grow bag included with FreshMushrooms® kits has micro perforations (small holes throughout the bag). This is by design — the micro perforations allow for air exchange, which is essential for healthy mushroom growth. Do not seal, tape, or cover these holes.

Water will leak through the micro perforations. This is normal. Always place the grow bag on a plate or tray to catch any water that drips through.

    Before you start

Clean your work surface with disinfecting alcohol, wash your hands and forearms thoroughly, and ideally put on sterile gloves.

Setting up the grow kit (Day 1)

    1

    Unpack the kit

Remove the grow kit, plastic bag, and paper clip from the box.

    2

    Remove and store the lid

Remove the lid from the grow box. Rinse the lid under running water and store it — you will need it again after the first harvest.

    3

Place the grow box in the bag

Place the grow box (without lid) inside the plastic grow bag. Slide the opening of the bag underneath the bottom of the grow box, with the micro perforations pointing upwards. The opening of the bag is now largely closed by the weight of the box.

⚠️ Do not add water. Do not mist. The FreshMushrooms® kit requires no water and no maintenance until after the first harvest.

    4

Place the kit in a good spot

Place the grow kit in a clean spot with indirect daylight and a normal day-and-night rhythm. Never place the kit in direct sunlight.

    Optimal growing conditions

    Conditions to maintain

    Temperature consistently around 23 °C, always between 20 °C and 28 °C — including at night.

    Avoid

  • Direct sunlight
  • Heat sources (radiators, lamps) directly next to the kit.
  • Enclosed spaces — never place the kit inside another container or box, as this blocks air exchange through the micro perforations.
  • Bathroom or kitchen — these spaces increase the risk of contamination.
  • The ideal place for your grow kit is a clean, elevated surface such as a shelf, desk, or top of a cupboard.

If your room temperature stays below 20 °C, a thermo heating mat can help. Read our guide on how to use a heat mat correctly.

Waiting for the first pins (Day 1–14)

Leave the kit undisturbed. Do not open the bag, do not mist, and do not add water. The micro perforations in the bag provide enough air exchange on their own.

The first small mushroom pins typically appear within approximately 2 weeks under proper conditions. However, low temperatures or suboptimal placement may slow this down.

    When the first pins appear

Once you see the first small mushrooms forming, place the grow bag upright and leave the top of the bag slightly open. This allows excess moisture to evaporate. Too much moisture at this stage is not good for the mushrooms.

Keep the paper clip on the bag but leave a small gap at the top for ventilation.

    Harvesting

From the moment the first pins appear, the mushrooms typically reach maturity within about one week. As a result, harvest timing is critical.

When to harvest: the mushrooms are ready when the veil beneath the caps is still closed but is about to tear or let go. Do not wait until the caps are fully open.

⚠️ If you wait too long to harvest, the mushrooms will release spores when their caps fully open, potentially reducing the yield of your next flush.

    How to harvest:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Pick the mushrooms by gently twisting the base until they release, then pull.
  • Harvest all mushrooms — large and small — including any growing along the sides of the substrate.
  • Remove any remaining small pins or stumps to keep the surface clean.

  • After harvest: preparing the second flush

FreshMushrooms® kits typically produce two good flushes.

    1

After harvesting all mushrooms, fill the grow box with clean tap water and place the lid back on.

    2

Let the kit soak for 12 hours. This cold-water soak rehydrates the substrate and prepares the mycelium for the next flush.

    3

After 12 hours, open one corner of the lid and carefully drain the excess water.

    4

Remove the lid, rinse it, and store it again. Then, place the grow kit back in the grow bag and set it up the same way as before (see step 3 of the setup).

    5

Repeat the process from the beginning. The second flush will follow the same pattern but may take a few extra days to show the first pins.

    Important: use the correct instructions

FreshMushrooms® kits work differently from other grow kit brands. Do not use instructions from GetMagic, Cloud920, or any other brand — the setup, watering, and maintenance are different. Always follow these FreshMushrooms®-specific instructions for the best results.
