GetMagic Ready-to-Grow Kit instructions

Applicable to all GetMagic® Standard (1200 ml) and XL (2100 ml) grow kits

These are the official GetMagic grow kit instructions for growing psilocybe cubensis mushrooms at home. GetMagic® kits arrive fully colonized and ready to fruit — no prior experience needed. Follow these steps carefully and your first flush will typically be ready to harvest within 2–4 weeks.

Not sure which kit to choose? Browse the full range of GetMagic® grow kits — available in 10+ strains in both Standard and XL sizes.

Before you start

Begin cultivation as soon as possible for the best results. The white substance inside the grow box is mycelium — the root-like network of the fungus from which the mushrooms grow. Its fluffy, mould-like appearance is completely normal.

Storage: If you need to wait before starting, store the unopened kit in the fridge at 2–7 °C for a maximum of 14 days.

What's in the box?

  • Grow box with pre-colonized substrate and mycelium
  • Grow bag with integrated air filters
  • 2× paper clips
  • Sterile protocol

Contamination is the most common cause of failed grows. Before every interaction with your kit:

  • Clean your work surface with disinfecting alcohol
  • Wash your hands and forearms thoroughly
  • Ideally, wear sterile gloves
  • Initial setup (Day 1)

    1
    Soak procedure

Remove the lid and fill the grow box with water suitable for human consumption. Replace the lid on the grow box. Place the grow kit in the fridge for 30 minutes to soak.

⚠️ No distilled water. Maximum 30 minutes.

Distilled water lacks the minerals needed for healthy mycelium. Soaking longer than 30 minutes can damage the substrate.

    2
    Drain the water

Slightly open the lid at one corner and drain all excess water from the grow box. Remove the lid completely, rinse it, and store it for future use — you'll need it again for subsequent flushes.

    3
    Let's grow

Pour 100–200 ml of drinking water into the provided empty grow bag. Place the grow box inside the bag. Fold the top of the bag over twice, folding as high as possible so the air filters remain unobstructed. Secure the fold using the paper clips.

    Do's and don'ts

    Do's

Place your kit on a clean, elevated surface such as a shelf or desk — this promotes airflow around the kit.

  • Temperature: 23 °C, as stable as possible — even at night
  • Light: Indirect daylight with a natural day-and-night cycle
  • Don'ts

  • No direct sunlight
  • Do not place in bathroom, kitchen or near radiators
  • Never place kit inside an enclosed space, another container or box
  • Too cold at home? A specialised heat mat can help maintain a stable temperature. If your kit isn't showing growth after 12–15 days, read: What to do if your magic mushroom kit won't grow — covers light, temperature and lazy or sleeping kits.

    Maintenance (starting from Day 3)

    Fresh air exchange (Day 3+)

Fresh air exchange (FAE) removes built-up CO₂ and brings in fresh oxygen. This is essential for healthy pin development. Perform it once every day starting from Day 3, and continue until you harvest.

  • Close windows to minimise airflow in the room and wait 30 minutes for the air to settle
  • Remove the paper clips and open the grow bag
  • Gently press the sides of the bag together to expel the old air, then pull the sides apart to allow fresh air to enter
  • Close the grow bag by folding it and securing the paper clips in the same way as during initial setup
  • Repeat this every day until harvesting
  • Humidity check

When you notice condensation inside the grow bag, the humidity level is sufficient and additional misting is not needed.

When no condensation is observed, lightly spray two mists of water inside the bag using a misting bottle
, after performing the fresh air exchange. Do not spray directly onto the substrate or mushrooms.

⚠️ When it comes to water: less is more. Too much water can stop mushroom growth entirely.

    Harvesting (Day 13–30)

The first pins typically appear from Day 10 onwards. Once pins form, mushrooms reach harvest size in 3–7 days. Harvest when the veil beneath the caps starts to tear — this is the most reliable signal, regardless of the mushrooms' size.

  • Wash your hands before handling
  • Harvest all mushrooms — large and small — by twisting gently from the base
  • Do not leave stumps — remove any leftover stem material to prevent rot and contamination
  • Also harvest mushrooms growing along the sides of the substrate
  • Harvest before the caps open fully. Released spores may reduce future yields and can cause respiratory irritation in enclosed spaces.

    Repeat for more harvests

After harvesting, restart from Step 1 (soak procedure) to cultivate a new flush. Continue this cycle until the kit stops producing mushrooms. Most GetMagic® kits yield 2–3 flushes.

    Quick reference

Hygiene Disinfect hands, arms, and workspace before every interaction
    Temperature 23 °C — stable, never below 20 °C
Soak time 30 minutes in the fridge — no distilled water, max 30 mins
Fresh air exchange Once a day from Day 3 until harvest
Humidity 100–200 ml in bag on setup; mist 2× only if no condensation visible
Light Indirect daylight — no direct sun, natural day/night cycle
Harvest signal Veil beneath cap begins to tear (Day 13–30)
