Dud Flushes: Why Some Mushrooms from Grow Kits Have No Effect

Posted under: Ask Mick, News and Science

Ate your home-grown magic mushrooms but felt no effect? You're not alone. This is called a "dud flush" — a harvest that looks perfect but turns out weak or inactive. Below we explain why magic mushrooms sometimes have no effect, what the science says, and how to prevent it.

Your grow kit worked perfectly. The mushrooms looked big, healthy, and beautiful. But after eating them… nothing happened. No trip, no visuals, no body feeling. Just nothing.

If this sounds familiar, don't worry — you're not the only one. In this article, we cover every reason your magic mushrooms may have had no effect, and what you can do to avoid it next time.

What Is a Dud Flush?

A dud flush is a harvest that looks completely normal but gives little or no psychoactive effect. The mushrooms grow well, they look healthy, they have nice caps and stems — but when you eat them, you barely feel anything.

Does this mean the grow kit was bad? No. The species in grow kits — Psilocybe cubensis — always has the genes to make psilocybin. But having the genes and actually making enough psilocybin are two different things. Think of it like a recipe: the mushroom has the cookbook, but sometimes it doesn't follow the recipe all the way.

How Much Does Potency Vary?

Many people believe that all mushrooms from the same kit are about equal in strength. Science shows this is not true at all. Growers on Shroomery have reported similar experiences — identical grows producing wildly different effects.

  • 5× difference in the same flush. Researchers tested 20 mushrooms from the same grow, picked at the same time, all about the same size. The strongest one had five times more psilocybin than the weakest — even though they grew side by side.
  • 25× difference between different grows. A large study found that psilocin levels in P. cubensis can range from 0.2 to 5.0 mg per gram. That's a 25-fold difference. This alone explains why some magic mushrooms have no effect at a normal dose.
  • Caps are stronger than stems. The top part of the mushroom (the cap) usually contains more psilocybin than the stem. This is true across most studies.
  • Each flush is different. Even from the same kit, the first flush can be stronger or weaker than the second or third. There is no fixed pattern.
  • ⚠️ Important: Two mushrooms growing next to each other in the same kit — with the exact same DNA — can have very different levels of psilocybin. This is normal. It is not a problem with the kit.

Why Magic Mushrooms Have No Effect: Common Causes

Psilocybin is not something the mushroom needs to grow. It's an extra substance — scientists call it a secondary metabolite. Your mushroom makes it from an amino acid called tryptophan, using a chain of four special enzymes.

Because psilocybin is not needed for growth, a mushroom can grow perfectly without making much of it. It looks fine on the outside, but on the inside, the "psilocybin factory" is not running at full speed. Here's why that can happen:

    1. Not Enough Light

Light plays a bigger role than most people think. Studies show that bright white light during the growing phase helps the mushroom produce more psilocybin. Red light or darkness can lower production. So if your kit is sitting in a dark cupboard, you may get beautiful mushrooms — but with less psilocybin inside.

Tip: Place your grow kit in a bright room with indirect daylight. A simple desk lamp with white light also works. Just avoid direct sunlight — it can make the kit too hot.

    2. What's in the Substrate

The substrate (the material the mushrooms grow on) contains the building blocks for psilocybin. The most important one is tryptophan, an amino acid. Research shows that adding more tryptophan to the substrate can increase psilocybin levels by up to 68%. If the substrate is low in tryptophan, the mushrooms will still grow — but they may be "empty" inside.

    3. When You Harvest

Timing matters a lot. The best moment to pick your mushrooms is just before the veil breaks. The veil is the thin skin between the cap and the stem. When it starts to tear, that's your signal to harvest.

If you wait too long — until the cap is fully open and flat — the mushroom has already started losing potency. Too early is also not ideal, because the mushroom hasn't finished producing yet. Wrong harvest timing is a frequent reason magic mushrooms end up having no effect.

Tip: Check your kit at least twice a day when the mushrooms are almost ready. Harvest when the veil is stretched tight and just starting to tear. Don't wait until the caps open flat or curl upward.

    4. How You Dry and Store Them

This is where many people go wrong without knowing it. Psilocybin is fairly stable, but psilocin — the substance that actually causes the psychedelic effect in your body — breaks down easily. Heat, light, air, and moisture all destroy it. Poor drying and storage is one of the most common reasons magic mushrooms have no effect.

  • Too much heat when drying (above 50°C / 112°F) can destroy a big part of the active compounds.
  • Rough handling damages the mushroom tissue. This activates enzymes that break down psilocin. The blue colour you see when a mushroom is bruised? That's psilocin being destroyed.
  • Bad storage — leaving dried mushrooms in an open bag, in a warm place, or in sunlight — causes slow but steady potency loss over time.
  • Avoid: Drying in a hot oven, a food dehydrator, leaving mushrooms in an open bag, or storing them in a warm or sunny place. These are the fastest ways to turn a good harvest into a dud.

    Sometimes It's Not the Mushroom

In some cases, the mushrooms are perfectly fine — but the person eating them doesn't feel the effect. When magic mushrooms seem to have no effect, it can be a personal factor rather than a potency issue. This explains why two people can eat the same batch and have completely different experiences.

Personal Factors That Block the Effect

    Factor What Happens
Tolerance Your body builds tolerance to psilocybin very fast. If you took mushrooms less than 2 weeks ago, the effect can be up to 50% weaker. Always wait at least 10–14 days between trips.
Antidepressants SSRI and SNRI medications (like sertraline, fluoxetine, or venlafaxine) block much of psilocybin's effect. This can last for up to 3 months after you stop taking them.
Body chemistry Everyone's body processes psilocybin differently. Two people of the same weight, eating the same dose, can feel a 3× difference in strength — just because of how their liver works.
Full stomach Eating a big meal before taking mushrooms slows everything down. Effects come later and feel weaker. An empty or light stomach gives better results.
Expectations If you expect intense visuals but only feel a mild body sensation and a shift in mood, you might think "nothing happened." Especially at lower doses, effects can be subtle.

Can a Mushroom Have Zero Psilocybin?

Almost never. Every Psilocybe cubensis mushroom has the genes to make psilocybin. In lab tests, some individual mushrooms show only tiny trace amounts — so small that you would need to eat a very large quantity to feel anything. At a normal dose of 1–2 grams dried, these mushrooms would feel like they have no effect at all.

But truly zero — not a single molecule of psilocybin — is extremely rare. What really happens is that the level is so low that a normal dose simply isn't enough to cross the threshold where you start to feel something.

6 Ways to Avoid Magic Mushrooms with No Effect

You can't control nature completely — mushrooms are living things, not factory products. But if your magic mushrooms had no effect last time, these six steps will help you get better results:

    1
    Mix and Grind Your Harvest

Don't eat one mushroom and hope for the best. Instead, combine mushrooms from different parts of the kit (and from different flushes if possible). Grind them into a fine powder and mix well. This evens out the natural differences and gives you a much more consistent dose every time.

    2
    Give Your Kit Enough Light

During the fruiting phase, place your kit in a bright spot. A well-lit room with white light is perfect. Don't put it in a dark closet or cupboard — this can lower psilocybin production.

    3
    Harvest at the Right Time

Watch the veil closely. When it stretches tight and starts to tear away from the stem — that's the perfect moment. Too early means less yield. Too late means less potency.

    After the Harvest

    4
    Dry at Low Temperature

Use a fan and good airflow in a dry room. This takes more time but preserves potency best. If you use a food dehydrator, keep it at the lowest setting (around 35°C / 95°F). Never use a hot oven.

    5
    Store the Right Way

Once your mushrooms are cracker-dry (they should snap, not bend), put them in an airtight glass jar with a small silica gel packet. Keep the jar in a cool, dark place. Stored this way, dried mushrooms stay strong for many months.

    6
Always Start with a Test Dose

Every batch is different. Start with a small to medium dose to see how strong this particular batch is. This is the best way to avoid surprises — whether the batch turns out weaker or stronger than you expected.

⚠️ Note: If you take any medication — especially antidepressants — or if your last trip was less than two weeks ago, this will reduce the effects no matter how strong the mushrooms are.

    The Bottom Line

Dud flushes are real, and they don't mean your grow kit is broken. Because of natural variation — up to 5× within one flush and up to 25× between grows — some harvests will simply be weaker than others. Add in bad drying, wrong timing, or medication, and it's easy to end up with magic mushrooms that have no effect.

The good news? You have more control than you think. Harvest at the right moment, dry carefully, mix your mushrooms, and always test a new batch with a smaller dose first. Follow these steps and you'll get the most out of every grow kit.
