Wild-collected from India’s Orissa state — a truly exotic lineage
Orissa India is a wild Psilocybe cubensis collected from the Indian state of Orissa (now officially Odisha) — a region not commonly associated with cubensis distribution. The strain was collected from elephant dung in its natural habitat, which is an unusually nutrient-rich substrate that likely contributed to the large fruit-body size the strain became known for. It entered the cultivation community via spore traders and quickly gained a following for the sheer spectacle of its fruiting.
Enormous fruit bodies — the standout trait of this strain
Orissa India is renowned for producing some of the largest individual fruit bodies in the entire cubensis family. Caps are broad, fleshy, and caramel-coloured, supported by notably thick, robust stems. The overall mushroom is substantial — experienced growers regularly harvest single specimens that dwarf typical cubensis fruits from other strains. Bruising is a strong blue. Spore prints are deep purple-brown and often impressively large, reflecting the size of the caps.
Collector’s favourite — what growers report
Orissa India is a firm favourite among collectors and experienced growers who want spectacle alongside results. Community reports describe it as producing an experience in keeping with a mid-to-strong cubensis variety, though these accounts are anecdotal. The strain’s appeal is as much visual and horticultural as it is about effect — harvesting oversized fruits from this strain is genuinely satisfying regardless of other considerations.
Rewarding for growers who give it room to express itself
Orissa India is rated moderate in difficulty — not fragile, but it rewards growers who provide adequate substrate volume and stable conditions. Its large fruits benefit from bulk substrates such as pasteurised straw or manure-based mixes where the mycelium can develop a strong base. Colonisation is medium-paced. Fruiting initiates at standard cubensis temperatures (22–25 °C) with adequate humidity. Yields are high when conditions are right.
