Sterile Corn Spawn Bag | Popcorn TEK 2000 & 4000 ml
Pre-sterilised popcorn grain spawn bag — the famous Popcorn TEK ready to inoculate. Whole popcorn kernels resist contamination thanks to their dense hull, hydrate evenly without waterlogging and produce reliable colonisation results. Available in 2000 ml and 4000 ml bags with self-healing injection port. No soak, no simmer, no autoclave required.

The Popcorn TEK without the prep work. Every kernel inside this bag has been rinsed, soaked, simmered, drained and pressure-sterilised under autoclave conditions, then sealed with a 5.0 µm filter patch and self-healing injection port. Open. Inoculate. Incubate.

What is Popcorn TEK?
Popcorn TEK is one of the most popular grain spawn methodologies in the mycology community, originating on Shroomery in the early 2000s. The technique uses whole popcorn kernels because they offer three strong advantages over millet or rye:
- Contamination resistance — the dense hull blocks bacterial and mould attachment far better than smaller grains
- Predictable hydration — kernels saturate fully inside without leaving pooled water at the bottom of the bag
- Wide nutrient profile — B vitamins (B1, B3, B6), iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium feed strong mycelium
A 2025 study in WJARR comparing five grain substrates for Pleurotus ostreatus spawn production confirmed that corn outperformed wheat, barley, rice and bird seed across colony diameter, colonisation time and dry-weight yield.
Compatible mushroom species
- Psilocybe cubensis — all strains, the most documented use case in the hobbyist community
- Pleurotus spp. — oyster mushrooms; particularly strong with pink and king oyster
- Lentinula edodes — shiitake (benefits from popcorn's moisture retention)
- Hericium erinaceus — lion's mane
- Ganoderma lucidum — reishi (with careful moisture management)
For faster colonisation across more inoculation points, see our .
How to use
- Prepare — clean your workspace, ideally a still air box or laminar flow hood
- Inoculate — push your liquid culture or spore syringe through the self-healing injection port (1–2 cc for 2000 ml, 2–3 cc for 4000 ml)
- Incubate — 24–27 °C in the dark; first mycelium fuzz appears at ~7 days
- Break and shake — at 30–50 % colonisation, gently break up the kernels to redistribute mycelium
- Full colonisation — typically 14–21 days for Psilocybe cubensis (corn is slower than millet but more contamination-resistant)
- Mix with bulk substrate — at 1:2 spawn-to-substrate ratio with our
Why a sterile bag beats DIY Popcorn TEK
Traditional Popcorn TEK takes 12–24 hours of soaking, 45–60 minutes of simmering, 30–60 minutes of drying, jar loading and a 2-hour autoclave cycle followed by 8 hours of cooling. We do all of that for you, in commercial sterilisation chambers, with every batch quality-controlled before sealing. The result is identical to home-prepared Popcorn TEK — without the labour and without the contamination risk that comes from manual handling.
Storage
Store unopened bags in a cool dark place at room temperature. Do not refrigerate. Use within 3 months of purchase.
