Why CVG works so well
CVG stands for Coco coir, Vermiculite and Gypsum — the gold-standard bulk substrate in modern mycology. The coconut coir provides bulk and water retention, the vermiculite creates the air pockets mycelium needs to breathe, and the gypsum (calcium sulphate dihydrate) buffers the pH around 6.5–7.0 while supplying calcium and sulphur. Together they deliver consistent yields, fast colonisation and outstanding contamination resistance.
Which mushrooms grow well on this mix — and which don't
Our CVG mix is the right choice for manure-loving and bulk-substrate species:
- Psilocybe cubensis — all strains (B+, Golden Teacher, PES, etc.)
- Pleurotus eryngii — king oyster mushroom
- Stropharia rugosoannulata — wine cap / king stropharia
- Agaricus species — button mushroom (with manure supplement)
For wood-loving species like Psilocybe azurescens, Psilocybe cyanescens, shiitake, lion's mane or reishi, choose our beech woodchips or wheat-straw substrate instead: .
How to use
- Prepare — work in a clean space, wipe surfaces with isopropyl alcohol
- Inoculate — add your fully colonised grain spawn ( ) at a 1:2 spawn-to-substrate ratio by weight
- Mix — break up the spawn through the substrate inside the sealed bag
- Incubate — keep at 24–27 °C in the dark until fully colonised (10–18 days)
- Fruit — introduce fresh air exchange, light and surface misting to trigger pinning
Pasteurised, not sterilised in use — here's why it matters
Bulk substrates like CVG are pasteurised, not sterilised after inoculation. Pasteurisation (65–82 °C for 1–2 hours) eliminates harmful contaminants while leaving beneficial micro-organisms alive — those help mycelium outcompete unwanted moulds. Our bags arrive sterile because they're factory-autoclaved sealed; once you open and inoculate, the bag environment behaves as a clean pasteurised substrate.
Storage
Store unopened bags at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. No refrigeration required. Shelf life is several months when the bag and filter remain intact.
Need extras?
