Hillbilly Pumpkin — Spore Swab Cloud920®

The Hillbilly Pumpkin spore swab gives you access to one of the most visually distinctive wild-origin cubensis strains available. First foraged in Arkansas in the late 1990s and later isolated for its signature pumpkin-shaped phenotype, Hillbilly Pumpkin is a prolific, contamination-resistant strain that produces some of the most recognisable fruits in the cubensis world — and dense, dark spore deposits that make agar work straightforward. Two individually sealed swabs, ready to use.

Hillbilly Pumpkin — Origin & Genetics

Cloud920® Genetics: Wild Origin

Hillbilly Pumpkin traces its roots to the late 1990s, when a Mycotopia community member known as "Hillbilly" began collecting and working with wild Psilocybe cubensis specimens found in Arkansas, in the southern United States. The original Hillbilly strain was prized from the start for its accessibility and reliable growth — but what made the community take real notice was an occasional phenotype that appeared in some flushes: an oversized, round-capped, thick-stemmed fruit that looked nothing like a standard cube. It looked, in short, like a pumpkin.

A cultivator known as "Mycology Mage" is credited with isolating spores from one of those exceptional pumpkin-shaped fruits and stabilising the trait across generations. The result was Hillbilly Pumpkin — a dedicated isolation of the most visually dramatic phenotype in the Hillbilly line. It has since become one of the most recognised cubensis strains in the community, with Oakland Hyphae giving it particular attention after it took the Microdose Champion category at the Spring 2022 Psilocybin Cup.

Why a Spore Swab Is Ideal for Hillbilly Pumpkin

Hillbilly Pumpkin has a notable quirk for anyone who has tried to collect spores from it the conventional way: it does not always discharge spores naturally. Caps can stay partially veiled for longer than expected, and some fruits never drop a usable print at all. When a strain produces such dense, meaty fruiting bodies, the genetics seem to put energy into fruit development rather than spore output — which means conventional print collection can be hit or miss.

A pre-loaded spore swab bypasses that problem entirely. Each swab is prepared by directly swabbing the gills of mature Hillbilly Pumpkin fruits under sterile conditions — no waiting for a print, no uncertainty about whether there is enough material. The strain's well-documented high germination rate means that what is on each swab tip is more than enough to establish multiple clean agar plates. You get the full genetic potential of this iconic Arkansas strain, in a format that works reliably every time.

Morphology & Spore Characteristics

  • Species: Psilocybe cubensis, wild Arkansas isolation (late 1990s)
  • Cap: Large to very large — some individual fruits exceed 200g fresh weight. Broadly convex to almost flat, with distinctive wavy, irregular edges. Colour ranges from warm light brown to rich orange-brown. The signature pumpkin-like proportions — wide cap relative to stem — are the result of deliberate phenotype selection from the original Hillbilly line
  • Stem: Exceptionally thick and dense — in the Pumpkin phenotype, stems are often wider than the cap at the base. White to pale cream. Ribbed texture visible in some specimens. Bruises blue on handling
  • Spores: Deep purple-brown, trending toward near-black in dense deposits. Ellipsoid, approximately 12 × 7 µm. Smooth walls, prominent germ pore. Described as some of the most richly pigmented spores in the standard cubensis family
  • Spore production: Variable — Hillbilly Pumpkin does not always discharge spores spontaneously. Dense, dark deposits when they occur, but gill-swabbing is the recommended collection method for consistency

Under 400–1000× magnification, Hillbilly Pumpkin spores are a highlight of any comparative cubensis slide collection. The deep purple-brown pigmentation — darker than most standard cubensis strains — makes individual spores easy to locate and study even in sparse samples. The ellipsoid shape, smooth walls and clearly visible germ pore are all textbook cubensis, but the richness of the colour gives Hillbilly Pumpkin a distinct visual signature that experienced microscopists learn to recognise quickly.

What Makes Hillbilly Pumpkin Different from Other Cubensis

Most cubensis strains, even highly distinctive ones, look broadly similar once you have grown a few of them — some are paler, some are darker, some fruit faster or slower. Hillbilly Pumpkin does not follow that pattern. The pumpkin phenotype is unmistakable: broad, rounded caps with wavy edges, stems that are as thick or thicker than the cap, and an overall silhouette that looks unlike almost anything else in the cubensis family. It is the kind of strain people photograph immediately the first time they see it fruit.

Beyond the visuals, Hillbilly Pumpkin has a practical reputation that has kept it in active cultivation for nearly three decades. Contamination resistance is strong, colonisation is fast, and the strain adapts well to a wide range of substrate types and growing conditions. It is what the community calls a "workhorse" — consistently reliable, rarely difficult, and generous with yields. The Oakland Hyphae Microdose Champion recognition in 2022 added a new dimension to its reputation, drawing attention to its terpene and minor alkaloid profile alongside the genetics that make it such a reliable grower.

What's in the Pack

  • 2× sterile cotton spore swabs, individually sealed
  • Each swab is pre-loaded with Psilocybe cubensis Hillbilly Pumpkin spores collected directly from gill tissue
  • Ready to use — no syringe, no liquid, no preparation needed

Spore swabs contain no psilocybin or psilocin and are sold exclusively for microscopy and taxonomic research purposes.

How to Use This Spore Swab

Work in a still-air box or under a laminar flow hood. Open the sterile wrapper, hold the swab by the handle, and streak the tip across a prepared agar plate in a confident zigzag pattern. Because Hillbilly Pumpkin produces rich, dense spore deposits when collected by swab, a single tip carries enough material for two or three plates — do not over-concentrate on one spot; spread the streak evenly across the full plate surface.

Seal your plates immediately with Parafilm, label with strain name and date, and incubate at 21–23 °C. Expect germination within 5–10 days. Hillbilly Pumpkin's aggressive colonisation rate means plates can fill quickly — check regularly and transfer promising sectors to fresh agar before growth becomes crowded.

Recommended Supplies

  • Petri dishes — run 2–3 plates per swab to make the most of the dense spore load
  • Agar Agar + Light Malt Extract (LME) — MEA plates give excellent contrast for tracking the deep-coloured germination halos
  • Parafilm — seal plates immediately after inoculation
  • A still-air box or laminar flow hood — for clean, controlled agar work

Cultivation Notes

  • Difficulty: Easy — strong contamination resistance and forgiving genetics make this a reliable strain for growers at all levels
  • Substrate: Sterilised milo grain, rye grain, CVG bulk substrate (recommended for aeration and moisture retention), pasteurised cow manure
  • Colonisation speed: Fast — typically 12–16 days to full colonisation at room temperature
  • Fruiting temperature: 21–24 °C
  • Humidity: 90–95% during fruiting — essential for full cap and stem development
  • Yield: Very high — 200–800g per run possible; individual fruits can exceed 200g fresh weight
  • Note: The pumpkin phenotype expresses most strongly on nutrient-rich, well-aerated bulk substrate — CVG or milo grain outperforms BRF for this strain

Start on agar and select for the most vigorous, rhizomorphic sectors before moving to grain. Hillbilly Pumpkin's wild genetics can produce some phenotype variation in multispore plates — that variation is part of what makes it interesting. Select the sector that shows the fastest, cleanest growth and carry that forward. On bulk substrate with consistent humidity above 90%, the pumpkin phenotype reliably expresses, and the results are hard to mistake for anything else.

Storage

Store Hillbilly Pumpkin spore swabs in their original sealed packaging in the refrigerator at 2–8 °C, away from light and moisture. Open each swab only in a sterile environment and use immediately — do not reseal or re-use a swab once the wrapper has been opened.
