What is Light Malt Extract?
Light Malt Extract (LME) is a fine, concentrated powder made from malted barley. It's packed with maltose, amino acids, and other essential nutrients that mycelium absolutely loves. Where agar agar provides the structure of your growth medium, Light Malt Extract provides the fuel — the nutrition your fungal cultures need to colonize quickly and grow strong.

Why Use Light Malt Extract?
Without a nutrient source, your agar plates are just solidified water — and mycelium won't get very far on that. Light Malt Extract solves this problem. It delivers a concentrated dose of fermentable sugars and carbon compounds that feed your cultures and promote healthy growth. Its light color keeps your agar plates clear and transparent, making it easy to spot contamination early and observe rhizomorphic growth patterns.
Key Features
- Rich in maltose and other fermentable sugars that fuel fast mycelium growth.
- Light color keeps agar plates clear for easy observation.
- Dissolves easily in water for hassle-free media preparation.
- Versatile — works in agar plates, liquid cultures, and slants.
- A little goes a long way: 50 grams is enough for multiple batches of media.
How to Use Light Malt Extract
The most popular recipe is Malt Extract Agar (MEA) — the go-to medium for mushroom cultivators worldwide. Here's the classic recipe:
- 10 grams Light Malt Extract
- 10 grams Agar Agar powder
- 500 ml distilled or purified water
Simply mix the ingredients, heat until dissolved, and sterilize in a pressure cooker at 15 PSI for about 30 minutes. Pour into sterile petri dishes under clean conditions and let them solidify. That's it — you've got nutrient-rich agar plates ready for inoculation.
Want to promote more rhizomorphic (strand-like) growth? Many experienced growers dial back the malt extract slightly — using around 7.5 grams per 500 ml — so the mycelium stretches out searching for nutrients. This also helps reduce the chance of contamination outcompeting your culture.
Not Just for Agar Plates
Light Malt Extract isn't limited to agar work. You can also use it to prepare liquid cultures by dissolving a small amount (around 10 grams per 500 ml of water) and sterilizing the solution. Liquid cultures are a fast and efficient way to expand your mycelium before inoculating grain spawn or substrate bags.
Pair It with Agar Agar
This product is the perfect companion to our Agar Agar powder (25g). Together, they give you everything you need to prepare professional-quality MEA plates at home. The agar provides the gel structure, the malt extract provides the nutrition — simple as that.
Who Is This For?
Whether you're a beginner just getting started with agar work or an experienced cultivator refining your isolation techniques, Light Malt Extract is a must-have in your mycology toolkit. It's affordable, easy to use, and trusted by growers around the world for producing clean, healthy cultures.
