Wavy Caps Outdoor Grow Kit

Start your own outdoor Wavy Caps (Psilocybe cyanescens) patch with this ready-to-grow kit. Inside is the Wavy Caps Spawn — a fully colonised 2 L wood-chip and grain mix — ready to be mixed with hardwood chips and buried in a shaded outdoor bed. A well-maintained patch produces 1–3 flushes per year for 4–6+ years — harvest every autumn between September and December.

Psilocybe cyanescens is one of the most potent wood-loving species and native to the European climate, making it the ideal mushroom for outdoor cultivation in Northern and Western Europe.

Grow Psilocybe cyanescens — one of the most potent wood-loving mushroom species — right in your own garden. This outdoor grow kit is built around the Wavy Caps Spawn — a 2 litre bag of fully colonised wood-chip and grain mix — ready to be mixed with hardwood chips and buried in a shaded outdoor bed. Once established, the patch will fruit every autumn for years to come.

Read the full step-by-step guide first

Before you open the kit, read the complete outdoor grow instructions. They cover spot selection, cold-water fermentation of the wood chips, Jack Cyan’s layered lasagna method, maintenance and harvesting.

When will you see mushrooms?

Timing is everything with outdoor Wavy Caps. The mycelium needs a full spring and summer to colonise the bed before the autumn cold snap triggers fruiting. The table below shows what to expect depending on the month you start.

You start the patch in… First harvest expected
February – April Same year, September – December (1st flush of mushrooms after the autumn cold snap)
May – June Usually the following autumn — mycelium needs more colonisation time
July – August Following autumn — too late for a same-year flush
September – January Store the unopened kit in the fridge (2–8 °C, up to ~2 months — do not freeze) and start in February

Once the patch is established, expect 1–3 flushes every autumn for 4–6+ years, provided you add a fresh layer of wood chips each spring.

Why Psilocybe cyanescens?

Wavy Caps are significantly more potent than standard Psilocybe cubensis varieties. Unlike Psilocybe azurescens, they are native to Western Europe and naturally thrive in the Dutch, Belgian, German and British climate. That makes them the ideal species for European outdoor cultivation — no need to recreate a Pacific Northwest microclimate.

What is included in this kit

• 1× Wavy Caps Spawn — 2 L fully colonised wood-chip and grain mix (Psilocybe cyanescens)

What you still need (order with the kit or source locally)

The items below are required to follow the instructions properly. We sell them as optional add-ons during checkout so you can receive everything in one delivery. Because hardwood chips and a 20 L bucket are bulky and heavy, you may prefer to source them locally (garden centre, hardware store) to save on shipping costs — either way works.

Hardwood chips, 20–40 L — we sell Beech Woodchips 10 L (10 mm), two bags give you the recommended 1:10 ratio. Coarse 10 mm chips are ideal for wood-loving outdoor patches.
20 L fermenting bucket with lid — for the cold-water fermentation step. Any food-grade bucket of similar size works.
Wheat straw mulch, ~2.5 kg — for winter protection (Step 6 of the guide) and dry-season moisture retention.

What you need to provide yourself

For hygiene and safety reasons we do not ship these items, but they are essential:

• A shovel or trowel to dig the outdoor bed
Sterile gloves for clean handling of the spawn
• A disinfectant (e.g. isopropyl alcohol) for tools and hands
• A shaded, undisturbed spot in your garden (north side of a hedge, fence or shed is ideal)

How it works (short version)

1. Cold-water ferment your hardwood chips for 7–14 days in a covered 20 L bucket.
2. Drain the chips until moist but not dripping.
3. Break up the colonised spawn into small pieces.
4. Build a layered “lasagna” in a shaded pit (30–40 cm wide, 10–15 cm deep): chips → spawn → chips → chips → spawn → chips, finishing with a pure chip top layer.
5. Cover with a thin layer of straw or leaves and wait 8–16 weeks for full colonisation.
6. Harvest in autumn when temperatures drop below 15 °C during the day and 5–10 °C at night.

Wood-loving magic mushrooms

Wavy Caps belong to the wood-loving (lignicolous) Psilocybe group. Other species in this group include Psilocybe azurescens (Flying Saucers), Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata (Ovoids) and Psilocybe serbica. Wood-loving species need a hardwood substrate — never use cubensis-style grain or coco-coir mixes for this kit.

Important notice

This kit is designed for outdoor use. Over time, other mushroom species may appear in or near your patch. Only harvest mushrooms you can positively identify as Psilocybe cyanescens — look for the characteristic wavy cap edge and blue bruising when handled. If you are unsure about a mushroom’s identity, do not consume it. Mark or fence the patch off if you have curious pets or small children. Make sure outdoor cultivation of Psilocybe cyanescens is legal in your jurisdiction. This product is intended for experienced mushroom enthusiasts and hobby mycologists. The customer is fully responsible for the use of this product. Outdoor growing conditions vary, and results cannot be guaranteed.
