Mazatapec spore print
The Mazatapec is one of the oldest and most spiritually significant Psilocybe cubensis strains, originating from the Mazatec highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico. It produces elegant, slender fruiting bodies with warm golden-brown to cinnamon caps and a characteristically slow, deliberate growth pattern.
Collectors treasure the Mazatapec for its deep connection to the sacred mushroom traditions of the Mazatec people and curandera María Sabina.

The Mazatapec strain is one of the most culturally significant Psilocybe cubensis varieties in existence. Named after the Mazatec people of the Sierra Mazateca in Oaxaca, Mexico, this strain carries the weight of centuries-old sacred mushroom traditions. Its elegant appearance, patient growth rhythm and spiritual backstory make it a deeply meaningful addition to any cubensis collection.
Sacred Roots in the Sierra Mazateca
The Mazatapec strain traces its origins to the mountainous highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico — the ancestral homeland of the Mazatec people, who have used psilocybin mushrooms in sacred healing ceremonies for centuries. These ceremonies, known as veladas, were nocturnal rituals guided by curanderos and curanderas who considered the mushrooms "niños santos" — little saints — and used them as tools for spiritual healing and divine communication. The most famous of these healers was María Sabina, who in the 1950s introduced ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson to the mushroom ceremony — an encounter that brought Psilocybe mushrooms to worldwide attention for the first time. The Mazatapec strain was among the very first cubensis genetics to travel from this region to the Western world, making it one of the foundational strains in the modern cubensis story.
Visual Characteristics of Mazatapec
- Cap: Medium-sized, 1.5–6 cm in diameter. Golden-brown to cinnamon when young, lightening with age. Characteristically convex and often staying partially closed even at maturity — a distinctive trait of this strain.
- Stem: Slender and tall, white to off-white, often reaching 10–15 cm. Bruises blue when handled, indicating the presence of psilocybin compounds.
- Overall appearance: Elegant and understated rather than showy — tall, slender fruits with warm earthy tones and a graceful, upright posture that reflects the strain's unhurried character.
Patient Growth, Consistent Quality
Unlike faster-colonising strains such as Cambodian or B+, the Mazatapec is known for its slower, more deliberate growth rhythm. It takes its time colonising substrates, but rewards patience with highly consistent flushes of uniform, well-formed fruiting bodies. This unhurried pace is often cited as part of the strain's charm — Mazatapec does things on its own schedule. It produces dense, dark purple-brown spore prints with abundant sporulation, resulting in clearly defined deposits that are easy to work with and store. The strain's tendency to keep its caps partially closed, even when fully mature, is a recognisable signature that sets it apart from other cubensis varieties under the microscope and in the collection.
How to Use a Spore Print

Why Add Mazatapec to Your Collection
If you are building a diverse Psilocybe cubensis collection, Mazatapec fills a role that no other strain can: the spiritual ancestor. Its direct link to the Mazatec healing tradition, the legacy of María Sabina, and the very beginnings of Western awareness of psilocybin mushrooms give it a cultural significance that goes far beyond genetics. Combined with its elegant appearance, distinctive partially-closed caps and patient growth character, Mazatapec is a strain that carries genuine history and meaning in every print. For collectors who value provenance and story as much as appearance, this is an essential variety.

The spore print arrived very quickly. Immediate and fast colonization of grain and substrate. Very fast and aggressive growth. As an experiment, i injected un-hydrated spores into a single spawn jar, and it colonized completely. The spores were from 2020, which may attribute to their freshness. Very much recommended!
