About PES Amazon: PES Amazonian from Pucalpa, Peru
Isolated and commercialised by Pacifica Exotica Spora, PES Amazon is a Psilocybe cubensis (a mushroom species from the Psilocybe family). PES was a Hawaii-based spore company, now defunct. PES put many classic strains on the map during the 1990s–2000s spore-trading era. PES Amazon (also PES Amazonian) is a Peruvian Amazon-basin cubensis. Caps run dark red-brown to golden-caramel and reach up to 7.5 cm. Stems are thick. Spore output is high. Prints are dark purple-brown to nearly black. This swab preserves a Wild Origin cubensis. Its origin has been repeatedly misattributed to Colombia in the wild.
PES Amazon: The Pucalpa Correction
PES Amazon sits in the Wild Origin Series. It was isolated from the Amazon rainforest near Pucalpa, Peru — not Colombia. The Colombia mislabel keeps showing up in vendor catalogues. Pacifica Exotica Spora made it popular during the early spore-trading era of the 1990s–2000s. It built a reputation for vigorous growth, large exotic-shaped fruits, and heavy flushes forming thick canopies. PES the company no longer trades. So PES Amazon lives on through downstream vendors. That is exactly why voucher-level swab material matters for taxonomy work. Voucher-level means microscopy done carefully enough to confirm the species.
Family points with the origin correction attached:
- Genetic Series: Wild Origin. A wild-collected isolate from the Peruvian Amazon.
- Country of origin: Peru. Amazon rainforest near Pucalpa (NOT Colombia).
- Developer / isolator: Pacifica Exotica Spora (PES). Hawaii-based spore company, now defunct.
- Type: wild-collected, then cultivated isolate (not a hybrid).
- Name: "PES" for Pacifica Exotica Spora. "Amazon" for the Peruvian Amazon collection site.
- Other names: Amazon, Amazonas, PES Amazonian.
PES Amazon: Look and Spore Print
PES Amazon reads big and colour-graded under the scope. Caps are dark red-brown to golden-caramel. They fade to yellow at the margins as they mature. Shape is dome to plane with a central nipple. Size is 2.5–7.5 cm across. Stems are thick and white to off-white. Length is 10–15+ cm. The largest fruits reach around 30 cm total height. Bruising is intense blue. Prints are dark purple-brown to nearly black. That makes the strain a strong candidate for spore microscopy.
Six anchors:
- Cap colour: dark red-brown to golden-caramel. Fades to yellow at the edges when mature.
- Cap shape: dome to plane. Often with a central nipple.
- Cap size: 2.5–7.5 cm.
- Stem: 10–15+ cm long. Largest fruits about 30 cm total height. Thick. White to off-white.
- Bruising: intense blue on damage or handling.
- Spore print colour: dark purple-brown to nearly black. Strong microscopy candidate.
Cultivation Profile of PES Amazon
This cultivation data is here only as reference for identification. It shows how the strain behaves in a lab.
Under lab conditions, PES Amazon is rated easy. It colonises fast with rope-like mycelium — mycelium that grows in thick rope-like strands (a sign of strong genetics). It pushes very high yields. A first-flush record of 1500–1700 g fresh from a 52 L monotub is on the books. That volume, plus heavy spore output, keeps the strain in circulation. It stays available long after PES the company stopped trading.
Numbers from vendor and community reports:
- Growth speed: fast. Rope-like (rhizomorphic) mycelium.
- Best temperature: 20–25°C for fruiting.
- Colonisation window: about 45–60 days from inoculation to first harvest.
- Recorded flushes: 4–9.
- Yield: very high. 1500–1700 g fresh first flush per 52 L monotub.
- Difficulty: 1/5. Easy.
