About the Penis Envy liquid culture
The Penis Envy liquid culture from Cloud920 is the original OG PE — the canonical, unmodified Psilocybe cubensis strain from which the entire Penis Envy lineage descends. It is not PE7 (an isolation of Penis Envy by “Joshua”, ~2019, with distinctive flower-shaped caps), not Albino Penis Envy (a leucistic PE × PF Albino cross), and not Penis Envy Uncut (a variant with a permanently sealed veil): it is the founding strain itself, in its historically documented form, supplied by Cloud920 in a 10cc sterile syringe under the Heritage Series.
The reason Penis Envy is distributed as a liquid culture rather than a spore syringe is biological and fundamental. PE's veil (velum) rarely opens fully, which means spores are not released into the environment in any meaningful quantity. The few spores that are produced tend to stick to the cap tissue; even concentrated print-based syringes have notoriously low viability. Liquid culture bypasses this limitation entirely by distributing viable mycelial material directly — making it the logical and now-dominant format for authentic PE distribution. When you inoculate with this syringe, you are working with live mycelium, not spores.
Cloud920 classifies OG PE within its Heritage Series — the cluster of long-established Psilocybe cubensis genetics with the deepest cultivation track record. No remixes, no reverts, no AF/Uncut tags: just the original.
What makes Penis Envy distinctive
Penis Envy is morphologically unlike any other Psilocybe cubensis strain in common cultivation. The defining feature is the cap: bulbous, dome-shaped, and persistently closed — it rarely opens to a flat plate even at full maturity. The result is a cap-to-stem ratio unlike any other cubensis: the cap diameter often equals or is smaller than the stem diameter, giving the fruiting body its characteristic and unmistakable silhouette.
The stem is PE's other defining feature. It is exceptionally thick, dense, and white to off-white — substantially wider than comparably sized standard cubensis strains. Blue bruising on both cap and stem is intense and rapid; Richard Guitierrez, who bred this strain, specifically selected for strong bruising over many years as a proxy indicator of alkaloid concentration. In PE, the blueing has been described as "like someone soaked it in blue ink."
It is worth placing OG PE among its own derivatives. PE7 — also in the Cloud920 Heritage Series — is an isolation of Penis Envy stabilised by the mycologist known as “Joshua” around 2019, kept in circulation for its distinctive flower-shaped caps (deep brown to chestnut, slow to open), dense stems and intense potency. It is a phenotypic isolation within the PE lineage with its own distinguishing character. Albino Penis Envy (APE) is a leucistic cross with PF Albino, expressing white fruiting bodies with reduced melanin. Penis Envy Uncut (PEU) carries the closed-veil trait to an extreme — the veil never opens at all — and has darkened caps. OG PE is none of these: it is the Rich Gee original, the strain all those derivatives trace back to. Both OG PE and PE7 are legitimate choices within the Cloud920 Heritage Series — choose OG PE if you want the canonical Rich Gee genetics, or PE7 if you prefer Joshua’s flower-cap isolation with its distinctive deep-brown caps.
The closed veil is also the primary reason PE produces near-zero viable spores — which is why liquid culture is the correct and dominant format for this strain. PE fruits are dense and heavy for their size; yield per flush is below average for cubensis, but density compensates. Aborts — locally called "blobs" — are common, particularly in early flushes, and are a recognised PE-specific cultivation quirk rather than a sign of failure.
Origin and history of Penis Envy
The true origin of Penis Envy was publicly clarified in 2021, when Hamilton Morris released a podcast interview with Richard Guitierrez (known as "Rich Gee") — the Washington-based mycologist who actually developed the strain. The widely repeated story attributing PE's creation to Dr. Steven Pollock had been, in Guitierrez's own words, "baloney from the very beginning. Pollock never even knew where I lived." Guitierrez had previously corrected the record in 1998 but went largely unheard until the 2021 interview.
Guitierrez obtained dried Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms around 1975 — not directly from Terence McKenna, but through his co-author Jules Stevens, via a chain of acquaintances connected to McKenna's 1971 Amazonian collection. He extracted spores, plated them, grew cultures in rye berries, and cultivated in a hexagonal plexiglass aquarium system he had designed himself. Out of three strains that emerged, one displayed the defining mutation: a cap that refused to open and a fruiting body that bruised intensely. He selected exclusively for size and strong blue bruising, cloning the strongest specimens repeatedly over several years.
By approximately 1978, the strain had been incrementally improved in potency and size and acquired the reduced, closed-cap morphology now associated with PE. For roughly the next decade, the mushrooms were sold under the name "Amazons." The name "Penis Envy" was coined around 1987–1988 in a chance encounter: Guitierrez and Jules Stevens were at a gathering with exotic dancers. When shown the mushrooms, the dancers remarked they looked like "donkey dicks." Guitierrez replied, "Do you have penis envy?" The name stuck immediately.
The first published photograph of the strain appeared on the cover of Guitierrez's 1995 book Cubensis Aquarium Gardening, though the name is not used inside. Commercial availability began in 2002 when Sporeworks.com developed an in-house spore extraction and concentration method specifically to make PE spore syringes viable — prior to this, the near-zero spore output made commercial distribution essentially impossible.
All PE-lineage variants — APE, PEU, PE7, Trans Envy, Tidal Wave, and others — descend from this original Guitierrez OG PE isolate.
Penis Envy potency profile
The most reliable community potency data for Psilocybe cubensis strains comes from the Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup, run by Hyphae Labs using HPLC analysis. Across multiple Cup submissions, Penis Envy has consistently placed above the cubensis average. The data shows an average of approximately ~0.94% psilocybin and ~0.16% psilocin dry weight, for a combined average total tryptamine content of approximately ~1.13% dry weight. The peak recorded result for PE in Cup data was 2.90% combined psilocybin + psilocin — among the highest ever recorded for the species.
The Shroomery cultivation community has long maintained a sceptical consensus summarised as "a cube is a cube" — the position that strain labels do not reliably predict potency and that cultivation conditions are more deterministic than genetics. PE is the most widely cited exception to this rule. The community phrase "a cube is a cube... except for Penis Envy" has been attributed to veteran Shroomery member "Roger Rabbit" and captures the consensus that PE represents a genuine outlier.
That said, it is worth being accurate: while PE consistently tests above the cubensis baseline, the claim that it is "2–4× stronger than average cubensis" does not consistently hold in Cup data. A well-grown Golden Teacher may outperform a poorly grown PE. Cultivation conditions, harvest timing, and drying method have a larger effect on final alkaloid content than the strain label alone. What the data does support is that OG PE, grown under optimal conditions, reliably produces above-average total tryptamine content compared to most other Psilocybe cubensis varieties.
What you receive in your Cloud920 syringe
Each Cloud920 Penis Envy liquid culture syringe contains:
- 10cc (10 ml) sterile liquid culture — live OG PE mycelium suspended in a nutritive solution
- One sterile needle for inoculation
- Heritage Series designation — Cloud920's classification for long-established, lab-isolated cubensis genetics
- Sterile, contaminant-free solution, quality-tested for mycelial viability before dispatch
Shelf life: Two months from production date. Store refrigerated (2–8°C) when not in use. Allow the syringe to reach room temperature before use. Shake gently before inoculating to distribute mycelium evenly.
How to inoculate with this liquid culture
Liquid culture syringes require strict sterile technique. Because OG Penis Envy is more contamination-sensitive than most cubensis strains — a consequence of its highly selected genetics — clean technique is not optional: it is essential.
- Work in a still air box (SAB) or in front of a laminar flow hood if available
- Flame-sterilise the needle until red-hot; allow to cool for 10–15 seconds before use
- Wipe all injection points (self-healing injection ports or foil-covered jars) with 70% isopropyl alcohol
- Inoculate grain jars at 1–2 cc per jar; inoculate bulk substrate bags at 2–3 cc per bag
- Colonisation is slower than most cubensis: expect 14–30 days on grain before full colonisation. Do not shake grain jars until at least 30% mycelial coverage is visible
- A casing layer (e.g. coir/vermiculite mix) is strongly recommended to reduce blob formation and improve pin set
- Maintain colonisation temperature at 22–26°C; fruiting temperature at 21–24°C, 90–95% relative humidity
Because this is a liquid culture — not a spore syringe — you are inoculating with living mycelium rather than spores. Colonisation typically begins faster than with spore syringes. The absence of viable spores is an inherent property of OG Penis Envy; the liquid culture format was developed specifically to work around this biological limitation.

Frequently asked questions
Why is this a liquid culture syringe and not a spore syringe?
Penis Envy's veil rarely opens, so the strain produces near-zero viable spores. Liquid culture bypasses this entirely by distributing live mycelium — making it the correct and most reliable format for authentic OG PE distribution.
Is this the same as PE7, APE, or Penis Envy Uncut?
No. This is the original, unmodified OG Penis Envy strain — the Rich Gee founding isolate. PE7 is an isolation of Penis Envy by “Joshua” (~2019) with distinctive flower-shaped caps (deep brown to chestnut, slow to open) and intense potency; APE is a leucistic cross; PEU has a permanently sealed veil. Cloud920’s Heritage Series is explicit about this distinction.
How does the potency of OG PE compare to standard cubensis?
Oakland Hyphae Cup HPLC data puts the average PE total tryptamine content at approximately 1.13% dry weight, above the cubensis average baseline of ~0.63%. The claim that PE is "2–4× stronger" does not consistently hold in lab data; "above average" is more accurate. Peak Cup data shows 2.90% total tryptamines.
Is PE difficult to cultivate?
Yes — Intermediate to Hard difficulty. PE colonises approximately 20–30% slower than beginner strains, is more sensitive to contamination, and requires stricter environmental control. A casing layer is strongly recommended. This is not a beginner strain.
What is the Heritage Series?
Cloud920's Heritage Series is a curated programme of long-established, lab-isolated Psilocybe cubensis genetics — strains with the deepest and most documented cultivation history. OG Penis Envy is one of the founding strains of modern cubensis cultivation and the logical anchor of the Heritage Series.
