The strain that wrote the book on home cultivation
PF Original — also known as PF Classic — was isolated by Robert McPherson, who cultivated under the name “Psilocybe Fanaticus.” In the early 1990s McPherson developed the PF Tek: a method for growing cubensis on brown rice flour (BRF) cakes in small jars — a technique so accessible that it became the entry point for virtually every home cultivator of the era. This strain was bred specifically to thrive in that method. It spread through early internet communities on Lycaeum and Shroomery and remains one of the most historically significant cubensis isolates in existence.
Medium-sized, classic-looking fruits
PF Original produces medium-sized fruit bodies with caramel-brown caps and a distinctive golden centre — classic cubensis morphology, clean and well-proportioned. Caps are convex when young and flatten at maturity. Stems are white, moderately thick, and bruise a moderate blue when handled. Spore prints are deep purple-brown. There is nothing flashy about PF Original’s appearance, which is rather appropriate: this is a strain that delivers substance over spectacle.
Reliable, familiar — a sentimental classic
PF Original holds a special place for long-time cultivators who learned the craft on BRF cakes. Community accounts describe it as producing a balanced, well-rounded experience — not cited as among the most intense cubensis varieties, but reliable and consistent in character. These are anecdotal reports; as always, growing conditions drive the result. For many growers, PF Original carries the additional dimension of nostalgia and historical connection to the origins of the hobby.
Designed for BRF cakes, adaptable to bulk
PF Original was bred for brown rice flour cake cultivation and it excels in that format. It performs well on small jar setups, making it an ideal choice for growers who want to try the original PF Tek method as it was intended. Colonisation is medium-paced, rated very easy overall — designed from the outset to be accessible. It adapts to bulk substrates too, though its historical home is the BRF cake. Two to three productive flushes is the norm.
