It first appeared in the 1980s — reportedly found growing wild in Florida — and quickly spread through underground mycology circles. No breeder has ever claimed credit for its creation. Appearance

Golden Teacher mushrooms are instantly recognisable. The caps are a warm honey-gold to amber colour, starting convex before gradually flattening out with a gentle central bump as they mature. Some caps develop a subtle wavy edge at full size. The stems are thick, sturdy, and white — occasionally showing a light bluish bruise when handled. Under the cap, dark purple-brown gills produce a generous spore print. Overall, Golden Teacher has a classic, elegant look: medium to large fruit bodies that grow in uniform clusters, making harvest day genuinely satisfying.

Golden Teacher is one of the most forgiving strains to cultivate. The mycelium is aggressive — colonising fast and outpacing potential contaminants. Got three waves. Each smaller than the one before it. A lot of mushrooms grew from the sides. On the third wave I put tinfoil around it which helped.

Right now waiting if there will be a fourth wave also.

I was surprised to have my first mushrooms ready after 10 days of getting the kit. It took 6 days for pinning with the first flush. After the first cold shock, the pinning for the second flush started after only 2 days. My first flush gave 108 wet grams. This dried to 7.6 grams. The second flush is in progress now. I'm very happy with this kit. I just wish there were XL versions of these kits. I might try the Mondo just for the XL size. 7.6 grams is a bit small but very quick!

After the first wave, I saw some local contaminations.
The second wave has been growing without any attention for two weeks and the flush was nice.
After that, the box became fully contaminated.
It was my first experience and the result is not bad.

I'm a first time grower and I was very pleased with these. They arrived promptly in neutral packaging and the instructions were clear and easy to follow.
I grew them using a heat mat. I put two small paperback books on the mat and the kit on top of the books. I got 3 decent yields. The first was 168g, the second 140g and the third 90g.

Each flush grew from the sides only and they were deep rooted so it was difficult to pick them without breaking the substrate. For the third flush I took the cake out of the box and rested it on the upside down box. I think I could possibly have got a 4th flush, but the substrate was in pieces and a new order arrived so I binned it.

I scrubbed up like a surgeon any time I had to put my hands in the bag and I only opened the bag for a maximum of 5 minutes to air them each day. I only had to mist inside the bag once or twice as there always seemed to be plenty of moisture inside.

The trips were good and I had a couple of nice insights but they weren't very deep or intense. I made the interesting discovery that mushrooms don't have any psychedelic effect if you're taking antibiotics. I was at the tail end of a course of penicilin for a tooth abscess and 100 wet grams had zero effect. I fell asleep and didn't even have very intense dreams. I Googled it afterwards and it seems to be a common experience.

Overall I was very pleased with this order, and I'd recommend Golden Teacher for first time grower.

Package arrived in good time however i discovered a crack in the bottom of the container and was advised to cover this with tin foil and carry on. First flush almost complete after two weeks. No mushrooms grew in the centre of the box, they were all around the outside, and so far I only have about 10 mushrooms. However the total weight of the first flush is 190gm, with a few stragglers being picked in the next few days. Then will start my second flush. Have started drying them and looking forward to getting amongst their goodness over the festive period. Will keep you posted... (Posted on 12/12/2018)
