Build Your Own Grow — From Scratch

Our ready‑to‑grow mushroom kits are great when you want a quick, reliable harvest with zero setup. But what if you want to pick your own species, use your own genetics, or simply learn what really happens inside a grow bag? That's where these products come in. Sterile spawn bags, substrate mixes and all‑in‑one bags give you the foundation — you supply the spores or liquid culture and take it from there.

Because these bags contain no mycelium, they're 100% legal to ship anywhere in the world. That makes them the perfect choice if ready‑to‑grow kits aren't available in your region, or if you simply prefer the DIY approach.

What's the Difference With a Ready‑to‑Grow Kit?

Our other grow kits — like Cloud920®, GetMagic® and FreshMushrooms® — come with fully colonised mycelium already inside. You add water, follow the instructions, and harvest. They're designed for speed and simplicity. The products in this category work differently:

  • No mycelium included — these are sterile substrates only, waiting for you to inoculate them with your own spores or liquid culture
  • Any species, any strain — cubensis, exotics, gourmet, medicinal or even truffle‑producing species; you decide what to grow
  • Worldwide shipping — because there's no active mycelium, these products are legal to ship to virtually any country
  • Full control — choose your genetics, manage your colonisation, learn real mycology skills from the ground up

The Two‑Bag System

The classic approach uses two separate bags: a spawn bag and a substrate bag. You inject your spores or liquid culture into the grain‑based spawn bag and wait for full colonisation. Once the grain is fully white with mycelium, you break it up and mix it into the substrate bag inside a monotub. The substrate provides the nutrition and moisture your mushrooms need to fruit.

This method gives you maximum control. You can choose different grain types (millet, corn) and substrate compositions depending on the species you're growing. It's the go‑to method for experienced cultivators who want to fine‑tune every variable.

The All‑in‑One Grow Bag

Prefer something simpler? The all‑in‑one grow bag combines grain and substrate in a single bag, separated by a filter layer. You inoculate, let the grain colonise, then mix everything together without ever opening the bag. Once colonisation is complete, you cut the bag open for fruiting. It's the easiest way to do a DIY grow without needing a separate monotub or extra equipment.

All‑in‑one bags are perfect if you're stepping up from ready‑to‑grow kits and want to try working with your own spores for the first time — or if you simply want a compact, low‑maintenance setup that still gives you strain freedom.

Don't Forget Your Spores or Liquid Culture

These bags are blank canvases — they need genetics to get going. If you don't already have your own spores or liquid culture, make sure to add them to your order. We carry spore vials, spore syringes and liquid cultures for a wide range of species and strains. Liquid culture generally colonises faster and more reliably than spores, so if you want the best odds of success, that's the way to go.

Who Are These Products For?

These substrates and spawn bags sit right between a beginner‑friendly grow kit and a fully DIY lab setup. You don't need a laminar flow hood or a pressure cooker — we've handled all the sterilisation for you. But you do need a basic understanding of inoculation, colonisation and fruiting conditions.

  • Growers who want to pick their own species or strain instead of being limited to pre‑colonised kits
  • Customers in countries where ready‑to‑grow mycelium kits can't be shipped
  • Anyone looking to learn real mycology skills — inoculation, colonisation timing, contamination management
  • Cultivators of gourmet, medicinal or truffle‑producing species who need a clean, reliable substrate
  • Experienced growers who already have their own spore library or liquid cultures

All products are prepared in a controlled lab environment and ship vacuum‑sealed from Amsterdam. Got questions about which bag fits your project? Our team has been supporting cultivators for over 17 years — we're happy to help you choose.
