APE221 — Spore Swab Cloud920®
APE221 is a leucistic Psilocybe cubensis from the Penis Envy family, packed in a sealed Cloud920® vessel with a sterile spore swab. Its white caps barely open, so the spores are collected straight from the gill tissue. Microscopy and taxonomy only.

APE221: The Swab for a Strain That Barely Opens
Want to study Albino Penis Envy, but tired of caps that never drop a proper print? APE221 is famous for exactly that. The ghost-white caps stay closed around a thick, dense stem, so a foil print is close to impossible. This Cloud920® swab is collected straight from the gill tissue, so you get the spore material that a print can't give you, ready for microscopy and taxonomy.
Origin & Genetics of APE221
APE221 belongs to the Penis Envy family. That line goes back to the Penis Envy genetics linked to Terence McKenna in the 1970s. Around 2006–2007, John Workman at Sporeworks crossed PF Albino with Penis Envy, and the white form that came out of it became known as Albino Penis Envy. The first threads about it showed up on Shroomery in 2007. APE221 is a later isolation of those APE genetics, selected for faster colonisation. Not every detail of the APE story is settled: some sources describe it as a mutation rather than a cross.
- Genetic Series: Heritage Series
- Country of origin: United States
- Developed by: John Workman (Sporeworks), original APE cross
- Cross: PF Albino × Penis Envy, with APE221 as a later isolation
- Lineage: Penis Envy family
- Pigment type: leucistic, white form of Penis Envy
APE221 Morphology & Spore Print
APE221 looks nothing like a classic cubensis. The caps are small, white to creamy and compact, and they rarely open fully. Below them sits a thick, bulbous stem that is often wider than the cap itself. Handle it and it bruises strongly blue. Because the gills stay mostly covered, spore output is low, which is why a swab works better for this strain than a print.
- Cap colour: ghost white to creamy white
- Cap shape: compact, rounded to conical, rarely opens fully
- Cap size: 1–3 cm, small compared to the stem
- Stem: white, thick and dense, bulbous, 5–15 cm long
- Bruising: strong blue when handled
- Spore print colour: light and sparse, with strongly reduced spore production
APE221 Cultivation Profile (for taxonomy reference)
Cultivation profile is documented here as taxonomic reference material only. This data describes how the strain behaves under lab conditions for identification purposes. Like most of the Penis Envy family, APE221 is a slow and demanding strain, even though it was selected to colonise faster than the classic APE line.
- Growth speed: slow, faster than classic APE
- Optimal temperature: 22–24°C for fruiting
- Colonisation window: 30–45 days in total, with pinning after 10–21 days
- Documented flushes: 2–4
- Yield profile: low, small and dense fruits
- Difficulty rating: 4/5
