B+ spore print
B+ is one of the most iconic and widely recognised Psilocybe cubensis strains in the world. It is celebrated for its large fruiting bodies with beautiful caramel to golden-brown caps and thick, sturdy stems.
First introduced in the late 1990s by the legendary Mr. G, B+ has become the benchmark against which many other cubensis varieties are measured.

B+ is arguably the most famous Psilocybe cubensis strain ever released. Its large, handsome fruiting bodies, forgiving nature and decades-long track record have made it a household name in the cubensis world. Whether you are a seasoned collector or just beginning to explore cubensis genetics, B+ is a strain you will encounter again and again — and for good reason.
The Legendary Origins of B+
The B+ strain first appeared in the late 1990s, introduced to the online mycology community by a Florida-based figure known as Mr. G, who operated through a vendor called Foggy Mountain Farms. Mr. G famously claimed that B+ was a hybrid between Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe azurescens — a bold assertion that has never been scientifically validated, since interspecies hybridisation of this kind has not been demonstrated in Psilocybe. Despite the controversy, the strain itself proved exceptional: its size, consistency and adaptability quickly won over collectors and growers alike, and B+ spread rapidly through early spore vendors like Ralphsters Spores and Hawkeye. Today, it remains one of the most distributed cubensis genetics on the planet.
Visual Characteristics of B+
- Cap: Large and broad, typically caramel to golden-brown, fading to lighter tones toward the edges. Convex when young, gradually flattening with age. A thick veil often leaves a prominent skirt on the stem.
- Stem: Thick and sturdy, white to pale, frequently reaching impressive heights of 15–20 cm. Bruises blue when handled.
- Overall appearance: Big, well-proportioned fruits with a warm, inviting colour palette — the classic "postcard" cubensis look that many people picture when they think of magic mushrooms.
The Benchmark Cubensis Strain
B+ has earned a unique status in the cubensis world: it is the strain that other varieties are compared against. When a new or exotic cubensis isolate is introduced, its size, yield and stability are often described relative to B+. This baseline reputation exists because B+ delivers remarkably consistent results across a wide range of conditions and substrates, from grain and straw to manure and coir. It is also a prolific spore depositor, producing dense, dark purple-brown prints that are easy to work with and store.
