About San Pedro
San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) is a fast growing columnar cactus native to the Andes Mountains of Ecuador and Peru, where it grows wild at altitudes of roughly 2000–3000 metres. It is also found in Bolivia, Argentina and Chile and is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant across the world. Older specimens can reach 3 to 6 metres in height; in the wild, columns of more than 12 metres have been recorded.
The species has a long ethnobotanical history in northern Peru, where it has been used in traditional Andean ceremonies and shamanic practices for more than 3000 years. Today it is most commonly grown as a decorative garden and houseplant.
What's in the kit
- 20 fresh Echinopsis pachanoi seeds
- Transparent growing container with lid
- Potting soil
- Coarse sand
- Gravel
- Perlite
- Printed grow instructions
Optional: sterilise the substrate
Cactus seedlings are vulnerable to mould and damping-off in their first weeks. Sterilising the substrate before sowing significantly improves germination rates and is recommended for first-time growers. Choose one of the following methods:
- Boiling water: place the soil mix in a heat-resistant container, pour freshly boiled water over it until fully saturated, cover and let it cool completely before sowing.
- Oven: spread the moistened soil on a baking tray, cover with foil and bake at 120 °C for 30 minutes. Let it cool completely before sowing.
- Microwave: place the moistened soil in a microwave-safe container, cover loosely and heat on full power for 2 minutes. Let it cool completely before sowing.
Allow the substrate to return to room temperature before adding the seeds — warm soil can damage them.
How to germinate
- Prepare the container. Place a layer of gravel at the bottom for drainage, then add the perlite-and-sand mix and finally a layer of (sterilised) potting soil. Lightly moisten the soil with clean lukewarm water.
- Sow the seeds. Spread the 20 seeds evenly across the surface and press them gently into the soil. Do not cover them — cactus seeds need light to germinate.
- Close the lid. The transparent lid keeps humidity high and temperature stable. Place the container in a bright spot at room temperature (around 22–28 °C), out of direct midday sun.
- Be patient. First seedlings usually appear within 1 to 4 weeks. Keep the soil lightly moist and ventilate briefly every few days to prevent mould.
- Open the lid gradually. Once seedlings are a few millimetres tall and show their first spines, start opening the lid for longer periods to harden them off. After two to three months you can transfer them to small individual pots.
Care after germination
San Pedro is an easy and forgiving cactus once it gets going. It prefers a well-draining cactus soil, plenty of bright light and a clear distinction between a warmer growing season and a cooler, drier winter rest.
- Light: bright, several hours of direct sun a day. Acclimate slowly to avoid sunburn on young plants.
- Watering: water moderately during spring and summer once the soil has dried out. In autumn and winter (roughly November to February) reduce watering drastically; in cool rooms it can stay completely dry.
- Soil: a free-draining cactus mix with extra perlite or sand. Repot every 2–3 years into a slightly larger pot.
- Temperature: happy at normal indoor temperatures. Tolerates short periods near 5 °C if kept dry, but prefers 10 °C or higher.
Legal information
In most countries — including the Netherlands and the rest of the European Union — it is legal to cultivate Echinopsis pachanoi as an ornamental plant. Description for growing isn’t good.they said you have to put that in microwave or oven to sterilize the soil,i know its a dumb idea but i trusted to them and the dish that soil was inside it was melted cause it is plastic so i just throw it out.Rating
MMS Customer support edit:
Sorry, this happened. The second line of the instructions should have been taken out of the instructions before sending it out. The sterilization process is not completely necessary and can be skipped. if you decide to follow the sterilization step please use a different tub than the plastic one that comes with the kit.

I's my first kit, the lack was on too generic instructions, you've to inform yourself on other websites or contact the support to be shure on what are you doing...Rating
After melting the plastic container in the owen, i thought i failed with the kit... but surprisingly after some days some little green thingy popped out... now they're 11th! One month passed now, and the first onces started to appear like micro san pedro whit a pair of tiny hair, and they're 5-6 mm tall.
I'm going on day by day looking their color and appareance, hoping they'll survive! (Posted on 8/29/2022) - The growing onstructions could be more detailed. Review by :)

Overall the product is good.Rating
Only thing is that it comes without any instructions, and you have to ask for them specifically. The instructions that I received was not too detailed compared to for instance shroom growing instructions, had to figure out a lot of things by myself. 9 out of 20 seeds sprouted.Rating
I can comment that the instructions are somewhat unclear. Especially the part about sterilizing the soil. I don't have a microwave and used the oven. the instruction says 60 minutes in the oven without any indication at what temperature. I had to find out that information elsewhere and the answer is 82-93 C. I had to buy a thermometer (that goes to 150C) to put in the oven and stand guard since the thermostat for the oven is not that accurate to maintain 82-93C. When it got too hot I opened the oven door...etc.
Also the plastic container cracked, not sure if I did it or it was broken during transport. Its very fragile so be careful with it. I then used a tupperware instead and it is even better since it is transparent from the sides also. (Posted on 3/2/2020) - 14 out of 20 Review by notme
