The Peyote Cactus Grow Kit gives you everything you need to germinate and raise your own Lophophora williamsii at home. The kit contains 10 fresh seeds, a layered substrate of potting soil, coarse sand, gravel and perlite, a transparent container with lid for humidity control and a printed grow guide. Peyote is a slow grower — but it is also one of the most rewarding cacti to raise from seed for collectors and cactus enthusiasts.
About Peyote
Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is a small, spineless, button-shaped cactus native to the deserts of northern Mexico and the southern United States, especially around the Rio Grande basin. Plants form low rounded crowns of just a few centimetres above the ground, with most of the body and a long taproot hidden in the soil. Wild specimens are slow growing and long-lived; mature plants of 17 years or more can form clustering colonies.
Peyote has a long ethnobotanical history in the indigenous cultures of Mexico and the American Southwest, where it has been used in traditional ceremonies for centuries. Wild populations are now considered vulnerable and are protected; cultivation from seed at home is the responsible way to enjoy this iconic cactus.
What's in the kit
- 10 fresh Lophophora williamsii seeds
- Transparent growing container with lid
- Potting soil
- Coarse sand
- Gravel
- Perlite
- Printed grow instructions
Optional: sterilise the substrate
Peyote seedlings are slow and particularly vulnerable to mould and damping-off in their first months. Sterilising the substrate before sowing significantly improves germination rates and is strongly recommended. Choose one of the following methods:
- Boiling water: place the soil mix in a heat-resistant container, pour freshly boiled water over it until fully saturated, cover and let it cool completely before sowing.
- Oven: spread the moistened soil on a baking tray, cover with foil and bake at 120 °C for 30 minutes. Let it cool completely before sowing.
- Microwave: place the moistened soil in a microwave-safe container, cover loosely and heat on full power for 2 minutes. Let it cool completely before sowing.
Allow the substrate to return to room temperature before adding the seeds — warm soil can damage them.
How to germinate
- Prepare the container. Place a layer of gravel at the bottom for drainage, then the sand-and-perlite mix, and finally a thin layer of (sterilised) potting soil. Lightly moisten the surface with clean lukewarm water.
- Sow the seeds. Spread the 10 seeds across the surface and press them gently into the soil. Do not cover them — peyote seeds need light to germinate.
- Close the lid. The transparent lid keeps humidity around 80–100% and temperature stable. Place the container in a bright spot at room temperature (around 22–28 °C), out of direct midday sun.
- Be patient. Peyote seedlings usually appear within 2 to 6 weeks; some can take longer. Keep the soil lightly moist and ventilate briefly every few days to prevent mould.
- Open the lid gradually. Once the tiny seedlings show their first segments, start opening the lid for longer periods to harden them off. After several months you can transfer the strongest seedlings to small individual pots with a free-draining cactus mix.
Care after germination
Peyote is a true desert cactus and very different from fast-growing columnar species. The key is light, drainage and patience.
- Light: bright, indirect light for young seedlings; mature plants tolerate several hours of direct sun. Acclimate slowly to avoid sunburn.
- Watering: water sparingly only when the soil is fully dry, and only during the warmer months (roughly March to October). In autumn and winter peyote needs no water at all and benefits from a cool, dry rest.
- Soil: a very free-draining cactus mix with extra coarse sand and perlite. Avoid heavy, humus-rich soils.
- Growth rate: expect roughly 0.5–1 cm of growth per year in diameter. After 5 years your plant will still be small but already very characteristic.
Legal information
In most countries — including the Netherlands and the rest of the European Union — it is legal to cultivate Lophophora williamsii as an ornamental plant. In a small number of countries restrictions can apply to cultivation specifically for the purpose of human consumption. Wild peyote is also protected in its native range. You are responsible for checking and respecting the legal status in your own country before ordering.
This product is sold strictly as an ornamental plant and as live botanical material for collectors and cactus enthusiasts. Picking peyote in the wild is prohibited; growing your own from seed is the responsible alternative.
Storage and shipping
Keep the unopened kit in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight until you are ready to sow. Seeds remain viable for many months when stored properly. We ship the kit carefully packed; please open and check the contents on arrival.
