Each 3 g package is hermetically sealed.

About red kwao krua (Butea superba)

Butea superba belongs to the legume family Fabaceae. It is a large, woody climbing vine found in the deciduous and mixed forests of Thailand, India, Vietnam, and Myanmar, where it climbs to considerable heights in the forest canopy. The plant produces striking flame-orange to red flowers, which earned it the common name "flame of the forest" in some regions. The root system develops large, starchy tubers that are the primary botanical part used in traditional preparations. Butea superba is related to the better-known Pueraria mirifica (white kwao krua) and occupies a similar cultural position within Thai folk herbalism.

Traditional and cultural use

In Thai traditional medicine, Butea superba root has been used as a herbal preparation for adult males for generations. The tubers are traditionally prepared as a decoction (boiled extract) or incorporated into herbal tonics and liqueurs. Thai folklore attributes general tonic properties to the plant, and it has been used by older men in particular as part of long-standing folk health practices in rural Thailand. The plant also features in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine systems of India, where related Butea species have been used in ritual and domestic contexts for centuries.

Active compounds

  • Flavonoids including butein and stigmasterol
  • Isoflavones — present in the root tubers
  • Beta-sitosterol and campesterol — phytosterols found in the root
  • Resins and tannins

Extraction and potency

A 25x ratio indicates that 25 g of dried red kwao krua root material has been concentrated into 1 g of extract. Water and ethanol extraction captures the soluble constituents of the tuber, which are then dried and milled to a fine, consistent powder. Each gram of this extract represents substantially greater botanical concentration than raw or shredded root material.

How to use

Traditional decoction method:

  • Dissolve 0.5–1 g of extract in 500 ml of hot water and simmer gently for 10 minutes.
  • Allow to cool slightly before drinking.
  • Add honey to taste.

The extract can also be filled into vegetable capsules: use approximately 500 mg (0.5 g) per capsule, taken with water. Begin with the lower dosage.

Pack size
