Why test the potency of your mushrooms?

Psilocybin content in dried Psilocybe cubensis varies far more than most people realise. Independent research has measured a 4× difference within a single grow tub, and over 10× across different sources and strains. A "1 gram dose" can mean very different things depending on what you grew. Testing gives you three things:

• Dose precision — convert grams to actual milligrams of psilocybin, every time.
• Batch quality control — verify your dried harvest before storing it.
• Informed responsible use — know your dose, especially for microdosing protocols where 0.2 g of weak material is very different from 0.2 g of strong material.

How the test works — 4 simple steps

1. Preparation — finely grind your dried mushrooms with a grinder , then weigh out exactly 150 mg (0.15 g) on a milligram scale . Tip: grind your full batch together first, then sample — this gives you a representative average across mushroom-to-mushroom variation.
2. Extraction — pour the 150 mg into the plastic extraction vial. Shake 10 seconds, rest 10 minutes. Repeat twice more (30 min total). Then filter 1 ml of extract through the Sterifilt into the glass detection vial using the syringe and cannula.
3. Detection — submerge the glass vial in a warm (not boiling) water bath for 15 minutes. The solution will develop colour during incubation.
4. Evaluation — hold the vial against a white sheet in daylight and match the colour to the included reference chart (0% to 2.4%). Read your psilocybin percentage and multiply by your total batch weight to know your full mg content.

Detection range and accuracy

Miraculix is a German lab (LeadiX GmbH, Jena) founded by Dr. Felix Blei, a psilocybin biosynthesis researcher. The QTest uses pharmaceutical method-validation standards (ICH Q2(R1)) and correlates with professional HPLC at R² = 0.9984. For most hobby grower and microdosing needs, ≤10% deviation is more than enough precision.

From potency to dose — using your results

Quick math: mg psilocybin = grams consumed × (% potency × 10). Example: 1.0 g of 1.2% potency mushrooms = 12 mg psilocybin (Beginner's Paradise territory). Storage and shelf life

• Refrigerate at 2–8°C if not used immediately.
• Shelf life: roughly 18 months from production date when stored cool.
• Bring the kit back to room temperature for 1 hour before using.
• A faint yellow tint in the detection solution after months of storage is normal.

What can and cannot be tested

Works on: dried mushrooms (cubensis and most other psilocybin species), dried truffles, dried mycelium, mushroom extracts (50 mg for 3× extract; 15 mg for 10× extract).

Does not work on: fresh (undried) material — water content interferes with the assay. Synthetic analogues like 4-AcO-DMT are not detected. The test measures psilocybin + psilocin combined; minor alkaloids like baeocystin and aeruginascin are not quantified separately.
