McKennaii — a tribute to the godfather of modern mycology
The McKennaii strain first surfaced in the early 2000s in Dutch smartshops, shortly after the death of Terence McKenna in April 2000. McKenna was an ethnobotanist and philosopher who co-authored one of the first mainstream cultivation guides — Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide (1976) — and spent decades advocating for the study of psychoactive fungi. The strain was named in his honour.
Who actually developed the McKennaii remains unclear. One version of the story says it was bred from a spore print found among McKenna's personal collection after his passing. The more widely accepted account is that a cultivator in the Netherlands developed the strain and named it as a tribute. Either way, the McKennaii quickly became one of the most sought-after cubensis varieties in Europe — and it still is.
Appearance
McKennaii mushrooms are immediately recognisable by their dark colouring. The caps range from deep golden brown to near-chestnut, often with an irregular, slightly wavy shape that gives them a distinctive character. The stems are thick, off-white, and bruise noticeably blue when touched — a visual marker of their psilocybin content. Fruit bodies are medium to large and tend to grow in dense clusters. Compared to lighter-capped strains like Golden Teacher or B+, the McKennaii has a darker, more rugged appearance.
Growth characteristics
McKennaii colonises quickly and fruits with enthusiasm. It is sometimes described as an intermediate strain, but with a pre-colonised grow kit, the difficulty level drops significantly — the mycelium is already fully established and ready to produce. In a kit setting, McKennaii performs reliably and produces dense, heavy flushes. It is a good step up for growers who have already tried Golden Teacher or B+ and want something with more character.
What to expect from this kit
This FreshMushrooms® kit is fully colonised and ready to start straight out of the box — no soaking, no watering, no preparation. Place the kit in the grow bag, fold the bag as described in the instructions, and maintain a steady 23 °C. The first pins typically appear within 7 to 10 days, with a full first harvest following at around two weeks.
Most kits produce two flushes. The first delivers the largest yield, with a second flush following after a cold-water soak. Total yield ranges from roughly 150 to 300 g of fresh mushrooms, depending on conditions and care.
Growing tips
McKennaii performs best with consistent warmth — keep the temperature as close to 23 °C as possible. A heat mat with thermostat is recommended during cooler months. I'm really sorry, but this was just a total waste of moneyRating
So 4 main things here
-It took them 2-3 weeks for the first mushrooms to show
-Gave only about 2 waves of mushroom which again took forever to grow
-Not potent, they have the same potency as any cubensis so nothing special
-Very small yields, gave about 7g per wave so max a total of 15g per total
Something worth mentioning is that i ordered them in the holiday season before x-mas, so that may have influenced the quality of the product since there is a lot going on in that period
Bought 3 of these XP boxes thinking it will be awesome to try something stronger, took the same dose i usually do and felt nothing different. Tried multiple times in hopes of getting different results because everyday moody mood may also affect how you feel the shrooms. Unfortunately after testing them over a couple of months i can say they are not any special to other cubensis regards potency.
What i liked about them tho it' s their magical looks. Thjey are very mystical, having white dots on their caps just like amanita muscaria and grow very robust with dark brown chocolaty veins on their stems. The first growkit i ordered was bad, i was moldy and lika a week after i set it up it was a gonner. They send me a new one witout any trouble and were very proffesional and polite.Rating
I'm a bitt dissapointed at the yield as i only got like 10-12 grams on first flush. The second flush is now growing with only five mushrooms. Kind of bad ????.

I have grown a lot, I have taken a lot, but I have to say I did not find these a very good strain, actually quite bad. Thin and physically little visible psilocybin when I bruised them with my fingernails. I took them both raw and dried, so it was not the drying process as I had first suspected. So for me, quite a poor strain and one I won't be buying again.Rating

- Very good grow kits if you handle them with care. I have large experience using different grow kits and I must say with this one I got really small flashes. Getting 3 to 5 mushrooms only, thanks god the mushrooms were at least big ones. I repeated the whole process (3 times) with the same success. So at the end I got around 20-25 gr (dried) per kit, which is quite low for what I used to get years ago. I'm starting to think that this is a general problem, because I have trying different ones with more or less similar results.Rating

I found the manual to be a bit inconclusive, because it said nothing clear about how often to mist and it was a bit confusing about what's to do with a heat map and what to do without one, so I didn't get the best yield so far (about 18g dried after the second flush). But when the second flush didn't work as expected, I put the cake upwards, and then the little friends started growing big. They're strange fellas, with a huge stem and big (one ended up with 2.5g dried).Rating
Nonetheless, the quality and potency is superb. I found them tasting good, too. I took the whole first flush at once and for the second time in my life I talked with the mushroom spirit.
