McKennaii — a tribute to the godfather of modern mycology
The McKennaii strain first surfaced in the early 2000s in Dutch smartshops, shortly after the death of Terence McKenna in April 2000. McKenna was an ethnobotanist and philosopher who co-authored one of the first mainstream cultivation guides — Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide (1976) — and spent decades advocating for the study of psychoactive fungi. The strain was named in his honour.
Who actually developed the McKennaii remains unclear. One version of the story says it was bred from a spore print found among McKenna's personal collection after his passing. The more widely accepted account is that a cultivator in the Netherlands developed the strain and named it as a tribute. Either way, the McKennaii quickly became one of the most sought-after cubensis varieties in Europe — and it still is.
Appearance
McKennaii mushrooms are immediately recognisable by their dark colouring. The caps range from deep golden brown to near-chestnut, often with an irregular, slightly wavy shape that gives them a distinctive character. The stems are thick, off-white, and bruise noticeably blue when touched — a visual marker of their psilocybin content. Fruit bodies are medium to large and tend to grow in dense clusters. Compared to lighter-capped strains like Golden Teacher or B+, the McKennaii has a darker, more rugged appearance.
Growth characteristics
McKennaii colonises quickly and fruits with enthusiasm. It is sometimes described as an intermediate strain, but with a pre-colonised grow kit, the difficulty level drops significantly — the mycelium is already fully established and ready to produce. In a kit setting, McKennaii performs reliably and produces dense, heavy flushes. It is a good step up for growers who have already tried Golden Teacher or B+ and want something with more character.
What to expect from this kit
This FreshMushrooms® kit is fully colonised and ready to start straight out of the box — no soaking, no watering, no preparation. Place the kit in the grow bag, fold the bag as described in the instructions, and maintain a steady 23 °C. The first pins typically appear within 7 to 10 days, with a full first harvest following at around two weeks.
Most kits produce two flushes. The first delivers the largest yield, with a second flush following after a cold-water soak. Total yield ranges from roughly 150 to 300 g of fresh mushrooms, depending on conditions and care.
Growing tips
McKennaii performs best with consistent warmth — keep the temperature as close to 23 °C as possible. A heat mat with thermostat is recommended during cooler months. The shrooms themselves are ok, for me they give more physical trip, body starts to feel very heavy,and super light at the same time. They are very good tools to get yur mind out of everyday world and take a look at everything from other perspective.Rating
But I think that XP added is for marketing etc, because they did not felt more potent than shrooms from standart grow kits. Also the shrooms were very small. Got 4 harvests out of this grow kit, but the last one was only 3 small shrooms. Also the third harvest vas very small, with small shrooms.
Overall as I said - I expected a lot more from XP grow kit, I have managed to get way better results (more harvest and potency) from standart grow kits.

I got this kit along with the Mondo version a month ago and I am very happy. This particular kit was very easy to grow as for the initial growth you don't need to do anything but to watch them and give them love. The first harvest was not big, but the second was nice. They are still growing. No problems with contamination. I guess that next time I will still spray the insides of the bag for the initial growth just to try it out and see if it will be better. The Mondo kit is also good. I still don't know what will be the difference in terms of potency compared to the Mondo kit because I tried only this one and I had a real good time ; ). I will write another review when I taste the Mondo one as well. I removed one star just because my initial harvest was very slim. But after that everything was great. First time growing, the first and second flush was a pretty good amount but after that it got fewer and fewer. Alltogether yielded about 300g which became 30g dried up. This kit was very simple to grow. Really hardly any effort required; however, with constant temperature control, the yield was still not great, about 200 grams total in 4 flushes. I’ve been buying from MMS for a few years now. The service is great. This time round I had a box that didn’t yield many mushrooms, I had a discussion with one of the guys and he sent me a new box which is in its 3rd cycle and has so far produced 2 big flushes. After my first grow kit (amazonians) got contaminated on the first flush I ordered the McKennaii and tried again. Every flush took about a week (from start to harvest) so that was surpisingly fast. The mushrooms look great and the effect was very good, these are great mushrooms except they are not very strong. I ate 3g dried and it felt like 2g of other stronger mushrooms, which would not be that bad but after I got 113g fresh from the first flush, the 2nd flush only gave me about 50g and the third flush was one lonely mushroom... Starting about 10 days after the kit arrived, it starts sprouting like mad. Probably around 40 shrooms, different sizes. 1 large one is enough for a (mild) trip, so I've got a jar in the freezer with a dried supply that will last me for months. Again this might be down to the way I'm doing it but the yield was decreasing with every flush. First I got 15, then 8, then 4 then just 3 shrooms. At least this kit seems robust enough to survive the environment I'm growing in. Very quick to fruit. Saw pins on the 3rd day. Fruiting time goes down with each flush.
