About Functional Mushrooms
Functional mushrooms are edible fungi with a long history of traditional culinary and wellness use, particularly in East-Asian food cultures such as those of China, Japan and Korea. In Europe they have been consumed as foods and in herbal preparations for many generations. Today they are available in modern food-supplement formats — dried powders, water and ethanol extracts, tinctures and capsules — that make daily use straightforward.
Traditional use
- Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) — a culinary mushroom with a soft, seafood-like texture, traditionally eaten in Chinese and Japanese cuisine.
- Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) — known in Chinese as língzhī and in Japanese as reishi. Used in traditional East-Asian wellness preparations for over two thousand years.
- Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) — a birch-tree fungus traditionally prepared as an infusion in Northern and Eastern Europe, Russia and Siberia.
- Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) — one of the most widely cultivated edible mushrooms in the world and a staple in Japanese, Chinese and Korean cuisine.
- Maitake (Grifola frondosa) — known in Japan as "hen-of-the-woods", traditionally foraged and eaten as a culinary delicacy.
How they are sold
Our range focuses on products derived from the fruiting body (the visible mushroom), prepared either as a dried powder, a water-extract or a dual extract. We list the species (Latin name), the extracted part and the standardised beta-glucan or extract ratio on each product page where the producer provides this information.
Quality and sourcing
We work with established European and Asian producers who supply documentation on species identification, cultivation method and laboratory testing for heavy metals and contaminants. Where relevant we indicate whether the product is certified organic.
How to use
Functional mushroom supplements are typically taken once or twice daily, with water or food. Suggested servings are listed on each product label and product page. Start with the lowest suggested serving and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Good to know
Functional mushroom products on our site are sold as food supplements. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical care, consult your healthcare professional before using a new food supplement. Keep out of reach of young children.
