McKennaii — a tribute to the godfather of modern mycology
The McKennaii strain first surfaced in the early 2000s in Dutch smartshops, shortly after the death of Terence McKenna in April 2000. McKenna was an ethnobotanist and philosopher who co-authored one of the first mainstream cultivation guides — Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide (1976) — and spent decades advocating for the study of psychoactive fungi. The strain was named in his honour.
Who actually developed the McKennaii remains unclear. One version of the story says it was bred from a spore print found among McKenna's personal collection after his passing. The more widely accepted account is that a cultivator in the Netherlands developed the strain and named it as a tribute. Either way, the McKennaii quickly became one of the most sought-after cubensis varieties in Europe — and it still is.
Appearance
McKennaii mushrooms are immediately recognisable by their dark colouring. The caps range from deep golden brown to near-chestnut, often with an irregular, slightly wavy shape that gives them a distinctive character. The stems are thick, off-white, and bruise noticeably blue when touched — a visual marker of their psilocybin content. Fruit bodies are medium to large and tend to grow in dense clusters. Compared to lighter-capped strains like Golden Teacher or B+, the McKennaii has a darker, more rugged appearance.
Growth characteristics
McKennaii colonises quickly and fruits with enthusiasm. It is sometimes described as an intermediate strain, but with a pre-colonised grow kit, the difficulty level drops significantly — the mycelium is already fully established and ready to produce. In a kit setting, McKennaii performs reliably and produces dense, heavy flushes. It is a good step up for growers who have already tried Golden Teacher or B+ and want something with more character.
What to expect from this kit
This FreshMushrooms® kit is fully colonised and ready to start straight out of the box — no soaking, no watering, no preparation. Place the kit in the grow bag, fold the bag as described in the instructions, and maintain a steady 23 °C. The first pins typically appear within 7 to 10 days, with a full first harvest following at around two weeks.
Most kits produce two flushes. The first delivers the largest yield, with a second flush following after a cold-water soak. Total yield ranges from roughly 150 to 300 g of fresh mushrooms, depending on conditions and care.
Growing tips
McKennaii performs best with consistent warmth — keep the temperature as close to 23 °C as possible. A heat mat with thermostat is recommended during cooler months. 25 g of dried mushrooms from the first flush and 10 g from the second; I might be expecting a third. It was a success for a first attempt. No contamination issues, thanks to sanitizing my hands and following the recommendations. I was impressed by the growth during the second flush: the mushrooms went from 3 cm to 15 cm in 12 hours !Rating

Temperature 21+ no lower, clean location and did all by the book. Not my first rodeo.
Well yeald was not great. 3 small flushes.
Maybe 4th will happen with 1 mushie.. Fruit bodies it self was smallest ever I had from other strains, reading what this strain is, I was expecting more potency.
Will not order anyumore "freshmussies" brand.

The delivery was very quick and the first pins grew after just 5 days. Very quickly. From the first batch we got 5g and from the second also 5. However, they were not potent at all. Maybe we did something wrong when drying them, or growing them, but we barely felt anything. I think coffee has more potency than what we had. Of course, I am open to understand why this happened, it might've been our fault when growing them, but i don't know how.Rating
I will purchase more though, to try out other kinds also :)

After contact with you it came to light that the mushrooms were dried in an oven with the door open, this will kill the potency of the mushrooms. To make sure that the psylocibin in the mushrooms not get destroyed it is best to dry them the natural way only without any heatsources:

I got only two flushes, also not so much mushrooms in each one of them. Overall, growing was easy, maybe next time I will try growing without heat mat, hope that gives different results. I am grateful for the mushrooms that I did get!

Growing is easy. A week after opening the kit, the first mushrooms started. We got about 9 gram of dried mushrooms, that from our point of view covered the cost price. We had nice trip using it, a lot of laughs and good atmosphere. The second flash was more challenging as the temperature dropped. I bought the heating mat, and the second flash is ongoing now, and more mushrooms are growing. We'll harvest them in the next days.Rating

However I have missed the start (I did not follow the instructions properly, due to an old habit I put water on it when started), the kit survived and right now the third flush is running, the second was more than the first.
