From the temples of Angkor to the fruiting chamber
Cambodia was collected in the early 1990s by ethnomycologist John Allen — widely known in the community as “Mushroom John” — from fields near the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat in Krong Siem Reap. Allen documented numerous wild Psilocybe strains across Southeast Asia, and the Cambodia strain became one of his most requested contributions to the cultivation community. It entered Shroomery circles in the early 2000s and has been a firm catalogue fixture ever since.
Recognising Cambodia in the grow tent
Cambodia produces medium-sized fruit bodies with dome-shaped caps in light cinnamon to caramel-gold tones that flatten with maturity. Caps typically measure 2–5 cm across. Stems are white to tan, 4–15 cm long, and moderately thick. The mycelium itself is notably fine and feathery — aesthetically pleasing in the jar. Bruising is a moderate blue. Spore prints are purple-brown.
Community reports: fast, energetic, and clear
Cambodia has a reputation in cultivation communities for producing an energetic, relatively clear-headed experience compared to heavier cubensis varieties. These are anecdotal accounts and, as always, growing conditions, harvest timing, and individual physiology play a larger role than strain genetics. What is consistent in community data is that Cambodia is frequently described as lively and uplifting rather than sedating.
A tropical specialist built for speed
Cambodia’s tropical heritage shows in the grow room. It colonises aggressively and rhizomorphically — among the fastest cubensis strains on grain — and fruits well at higher temperatures (23–26 °C) that would stress more temperate varieties. It is a particularly good choice for warm-room setups or summer grows where temperature control is limited. Expect 3–5 solid flushes with consistent, medium-to-high yields.
