A thermo mat uses electricity (230 V) to heat up. When touching the heating mat at full power, it reaches up to 35°C. A process called ‘diffusion’ spreads some of that heat, so the magic mushroom grow kit placed on top of the heating mat is warmed up to 24°C. This is the ideal temperature for Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms to fruit.

Always check the humidity of the grow kit when using a heatmat — water will evaporate quicker.

When do you need a thermo mat?

The cubensis magic mushroom grow kits produce mushrooms only between 18°C and 29°C. Below 18°C, the mycelium in the grow kit goes into a dormant state and no mushrooms will form. The use of thermo mats is strongly recommended in:

• Autumn and winter
• Colder regions of the world
• Cellars and cool growing rooms
• Fluctuating temperatures (warm in the day, cold at night)

What do you need?

To use a thermo mat, all you need is:

• 230 V electricity. If this voltage is not available in your country, use a universal power adapter
• Accessories to elevate the thermo mat from a solid surface and create air space under the grow kit

How to use a thermo mat

Using a thermo mat is straightforward:

1. Place the thermo mat on an elevated surface so that air can flow freely under the mat. Easy ways to elevate it:
   • A pan coaster
   • Shot glasses
   • Corks
2. Create some space on top of the mat to add an air layer between the grow kit and the mat.
3. Place the grow kit on top of the mat. If the heat is too high, use the lid as a spacer to add extra distance from the heat source. The grow box should be inside the grow bag with micron filter.
4. Plug the power plug into the socket and that’s it.

The thermo mat should not get wet.

The thermo mat can be switched on 24/7 as long as air can flow freely under it. This prevents heat build-up inside the mat.

Note: The instructions of the magic mushroom grow kits mention that the grow kit should be placed back in the carton box. Do not do this when you use the thermo mat.

How much electricity does a thermo mat use?
A thermo mat draws a small amount of power continuously. Running it 24/7 over a typical grow cycle adds only a few kWh to your electricity bill.

Can I leave the thermo mat on all the time?
Yes, as long as air can circulate freely under the mat and the grow kit does not overheat. Check the kit temperature regularly.

What if the grow kit gets too warm?
Increase the distance between the mat and the kit using the lid or a small spacer, and check the room temperature.
