What are mushroom spores?
Spores are the reproductive units of fungi — microscopic structures that carry the complete genetic blueprint of the mushroom. Unlike seeds, spores contain no stored nutrients; they need the right environmental conditions to germinate and develop into mycelium. One important fact: spores do not contain psilocybin or psilocin — these compounds are only produced later, once mycelium begins to form. This is what makes spores suitable for microscopy research and educational purposes. Want to understand the full biology? Read Why Magic Mushroom Spores Don't Contain Psilocybin and Mycelium Explained to understand the spore → mycelium life cycle.
Spore prints — the long-term archive
A spore print is made by placing a mature mushroom cap — specifically its spore-bearing gills — on sterile foil and allowing it to deposit millions of spores. The result is a dry, stable print that can be stored for years when kept cool and dark. Spore prints are the most cost-effective format and ideal for researchers who want to build a long-term strain library, work on agar plates, or prepare their own spore solution. Each print in our collection is produced under sterile conditions and quality-tested before release.
- Long shelf life — years when stored at 2–8°C, dark and dry
- Contains millions of spores — a single print lasts for dozens of plates
- Ideal for microscopy, agar work and creating your own spore solutions
- Most cost-effective format for building a strain collection
- Available in strains including Golden Teacher, McKennaii, B+, Mazatapec, Thai and more
New to spore prints? Our step-by-step guide How to Use a Spore Print walks you through the full 4-stage process — from print to agar, agar to liquid culture, and liquid culture to colonised grain. For the science of where spores originate, read Gills of the Magic Mushroom.
Spore vials — precision in glass
Spore vials contain spores suspended in sterile water, sealed in a glass vial with a rubber septum. The glass construction eliminates static build-up — a real problem with plastic alternatives, where spores cling to the walls and distribution becomes uneven over time. Vials can be resealed after use, making them significantly more efficient and longer-lasting. With approximately 1,000 spores per millilitre, one vial contains ample inoculation capacity for multiple substrates or microscopy slides.
- Glass construction prevents static — spores stay evenly distributed
- Resealable rubber septum for multiple uses from one vial
- Shelf life up to 2 years when stored correctly at 2–8°C
- Ideal for agar work, grain inoculation and PF Tek
- Available in the same wide strain selection as our spore prints

Spore swabs — clean, precise, ready to use
A spore swab is a sterile cotton swab pre-loaded with mushroom spores. Swabs are one of the cleanest and most practical formats for spore transfer work — perfect for inoculating agar plates directly, sampling specific areas of a culture, or working in a still-air box without a flow hood. Each swab is individually sealed and ready to use straight from the packaging. No preparation, no mess, no guesswork. Check the category for currently available strains.
- Pre-loaded sterile swab — no preparation needed
- Ideal for direct agar inoculation and precise microscopy work
- Individual sterile packaging — stays clean until the moment of use
- Great shelf life in dry, cool storage at 2–8°C
- The cleanest format for delicate or advanced agar work
Liquid cultures — start with active mycelium
Liquid cultures take you one step beyond spores. Instead of dormant spores that need to germinate, a liquid culture contains active, living mycelium suspended in a sterile nutrient solution. Colonisation begins immediately after inoculation — no germination phase, no waiting. This makes liquid cultures the fastest and most reliable route from inoculation to fruiting, especially for cultivators who want consistent, predictable results. Our Cloud920 liquid cultures cover a wide range of Psilocybe cubensis strains, plus a dedicated Lion's Mane culture for gourmet and medicinal cultivation.
- Active mycelium — colonisation starts immediately after inoculation
- Significantly faster than working from spores — no germination phase
- Lower contamination risk than spore-based formats
- Keep refrigerated at 2–8°C — best used within 2 months of arrival
- Available across a wide range of strains via Cloud920, including Lion's Mane

Which format is right for you?
Not sure which format matches your goals? Here's a quick guide based on experience level and application:
- New to mycology / starting with microscopy: Spore print or spore vial — simple, affordable, long shelf life
- Agar work and strain isolation: Spore swabs for the cleanest direct plate inoculation; prints or vials also work well — read our agar plate guide to get started
- Building a long-term strain archive: Spore prints — compact, stable for years, cost-effective per strain
- Experienced cultivator who wants fast results: Liquid culture — active mycelium, fastest colonisation, lowest contamination risk
- Growing Lion's Mane (gourmet / medicinal): Our dedicated Lion's Mane liquid culture is the most reliable starting point
All spores are sold strictly for microscopy research and educational purposes. Spores do not contain psilocybin or psilocin. It is your responsibility to verify the regulations regarding mushroom cultivation in your own country before ordering. 18+ only.
