How to Dry and Store Magic Mushrooms — Why Air Drying Keeps Potency Best
Posted under: Growing & Cultivation

Air drying preserves potency. Oven drying destroys it. If you want to dry magic mushrooms properly and keep them strong for months, this guide shows you exactly how. Most magic mushroom grow kits produce 100–300 grams of fresh mushrooms in total — far more than you can eat at once. Therefore, drying and storing your harvest correctly is one of the most important skills a grower can learn.
In this guide: the 3-step air drying method, a full comparison of drying methods, the best storage containers for long-term potency, how long dried mushrooms last, and answers to the most common questions.
Quick answer: spread your mushrooms on paper towel, place them in a well-ventilated room for 4–7 days, and store them in an airtight container with a silica gel packet. Never use an oven.
Before You Dry — The Grower's Checklist
To get the most out of drying, make sure you have completed these steps first. Each one affects the quality of your final harvest.
Once your mushrooms are harvested, weighed, and admired — it is time to dry them. The method you choose will directly affect how strong they are when you use them.
Why Air Drying Is the Only Method We Recommend
There are several ways to dry magic mushrooms: ovens, food dehydrators, and natural air drying. However, after years of customer experience at Magic Mushrooms Shop, we strongly recommend air drying as the safest and most reliable method.
⚠️ Important: more than 75% of the time when a customer contacts us saying their mushrooms did not work, it turns out they dried them in an oven or food dehydrator. This is by far the most common reason for disappointing results.
The reason is psilocin. While psilocybin (the main active compound) is relatively heat-stable, psilocin — the compound directly responsible for the psychoactive effect — is much more sensitive to heat. Consequently, even moderate temperatures can break down psilocin and significantly reduce the potency of your dried mushrooms.
Most household ovens cannot reliably hold temperatures below 70–80°C. As a result, mushrooms dried in an oven are often partially cooked rather than gently dried. Food dehydrators offer better control, but many users still set the temperature too high or leave the mushrooms in too long. Air drying uses no heat at all — therefore, there is zero risk of heat damage.
How to Dry Magic Mushrooms — 3 Steps
Place the mushrooms on paper towel
First, lay your freshly harvested mushrooms on a clean sheet of paper towel. Make sure they are spread out and not touching each other. In addition, place them in a single layer — stacking mushrooms on top of each other traps moisture and slows drying significantly.
Air dry for 4–7 days
Next, leave the mushrooms in a well-ventilated room at normal room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight, because UV light degrades psilocybin over time. Furthermore, a small desk fan pointed gently at the mushrooms can cut drying time in half — especially in humid conditions. The mushrooms are ready when the stems snap cleanly instead of bending.
Check for cracker-dry before storing
Finally, before you move on to storage, check that every mushroom is completely dry. They should feel very light and snap like a cracker when you bend them. If a stem bends instead of snapping, it needs more time. Even a small amount of remaining moisture can cause mould during storage and ruin your entire harvest.
Tip: a small desk fan on low speed, pointed at the mushrooms from about 50 cm away, is the single most effective way to speed up air drying. It does not damage potency and works especially well in humid climates or during summer.
Drying Methods Compared
Not all drying methods are equal. In general, the more heat is involved, the greater the risk to potency. Use this table to choose the right method for your situation.
| ✅ Air drying | No heat, no risk to potency. Takes 4–7 days. Our recommended method for all growers. |
| ⚠️ Food dehydrator | Acceptable only if you can keep the temperature below 35°C / 95°F. Risk of overheating if not carefully monitored. Not recommended for beginners. |
| ❌ Oven | Not recommended. Most household ovens cannot hold temperatures below 70–80°C. Mushrooms will partially cook and lose most of their potency. |
| ❌ Direct sunlight | Not recommended. UV light degrades psilocybin over prolonged exposure. Can also cause uneven drying. |
How to Store Dried Magic Mushrooms
Once your mushrooms are cracker-dry, proper storage protects your work. The three enemies of stored mushrooms are moisture, light, and air. Therefore, the goal is simple: keep them in an airtight, lightproof container in a cool, dry place.
In addition, place a fresh paper towel or a silica gel packet at the bottom of your container. Both absorb any trace of remaining moisture. After that, seal the container and store it in a closed cupboard or drawer — away from sunlight, heat sources, and temperature changes. Importantly, do not store dried mushrooms in the fridge. The humidity inside a fridge will make them moist again, which leads to mould and loss of potency.
⚠️ Never store dried mushrooms in the fridge. The humidity inside causes them to absorb moisture again, which leads to mould and significantly reduced potency. A cool, dark cupboard is always the better choice.
How Long Do Dried Magic Mushrooms Last?
Properly dried and stored mushrooms last approximately 8–12 months without significant potency loss. However, potency does gradually decrease over time even under ideal conditions. Therefore, it is best to use your harvest within 6 months for the strongest experience. Mushrooms stored longer than 12 months are unlikely to have mould if they were cracker-dry, but they will be noticeably weaker.
| 0–6 months | Full potency. Best window for use. |
| 6–12 months | Good potency. Minor degradation expected. |
| 12–24 months | Noticeably weaker. Still usable if stored correctly. |
| Over 24 months | Significant potency loss. Not recommended. |
Best Storage Products for Dried Mushrooms
For the best long-term storage, we recommend combining an airtight container with a silica gel packet. Together, they protect against all three enemies: moisture, light, and air. Below are the three products we use and recommend.
| Product | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| TightVac Stashbox — Solid Black | Rigid vacuum-seal container available in 4 sizes (20, 40, 75, and 150 g capacity). Airtight, lightproof, and odour-proof. The best long-term container for dried mushrooms. | From €6.95 |
| G-Rollz Storage Bag — 150 × 200 mm | Smellproof, waterproof, and UV-protected resealable bag. Reusable and food-safe. A good everyday option for smaller harvests or travel. | €0.99 |
| Silica Gel Packets — 10 bags | Drop one or two packets inside any container or bag. They absorb moisture continuously and keep your dried mushrooms cracker-dry for months. | €1.95 |
Best combination: a TightVac Stashbox with one or two silica gel packets inside. The vacuum seal removes the air; the silica absorbs any remaining moisture. Together, they give you the longest possible shelf life.
What to Do With Dried Mushrooms
Once dried, your mushrooms can be used in several ways beyond eating them whole. In addition to the standard method, powdering them with a blender opens up more precise and creative options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do magic mushrooms lose potency when dried?
No — if you air dry them correctly, potency is fully preserved. The risk of potency loss comes from heat. Psilocin, one of the two main active compounds, breaks down at elevated temperatures. Air drying uses no heat at all, so both psilocybin and psilocin remain intact.
Can you use a food dehydrator to dry magic mushrooms?
Yes, but only if you can hold the temperature below 35°C / 95°F throughout the entire process. Most food dehydrators have a minimum setting of 40–50°C, which is already too high. Furthermore, even at 35°C, leaving mushrooms in too long can cause gradual potency loss. For beginners, air drying is always safer.
How do you know when magic mushrooms are fully dry?
The snap test is the most reliable method. Pick up a mushroom stem and try to bend it. If it snaps cleanly like a dry twig, the mushroom is ready. If it bends without snapping, it needs more time. In addition, fully dried mushrooms feel very light — much lighter than you expect from their size.
How long do dried magic mushrooms last?
Properly dried and stored mushrooms last 8–12 months with minimal potency loss. For the best experience, use them within 6 months. After 12 months, potency decreases noticeably even under ideal storage conditions.
Where should you store dried magic mushrooms?
In an airtight, lightproof container in a cool, dark place — such as a closed cupboard or drawer. Never in the fridge. The humidity inside a fridge makes dried mushrooms moist again, which causes mould and potency loss. A vacuum-seal stashbox combined with a silica gel packet gives you the longest shelf life.
Can you freeze dried magic mushrooms?
Yes — freezing is an option for very long-term storage, but only if the mushrooms are cracker-dry first. Any remaining moisture will form ice crystals that damage the cell walls and degrade potency. If they are completely dry, a sealed freezer bag or airtight container in the freezer can extend shelf life beyond 12 months.
