White Sage smudge stick — a hand-tied bundle of Salvia apiana leaves, sun-dried and finished into a ~10-12 cm stick. Lit at one end and allowed to smoulder, it releases a clean, slightly bitter herbal smoke that has been used in cleansing rituals for centuries. Sold as a single hand-tied stick.
Where Our Sage Comes From
White Sage is native to southwest California and northwestern Baja California. Wild populations have been under pressure from over-harvesting and habitat loss — for that reason, this smudge stick is ethically harvested in Oregon, in the United States, where our supplier works with practices that preserve the natural ecosystem and honour the cultural significance of the plant. Each bundle is hand-tied and sun-dried before packing.
A Plant Held Sacred — Use Respectfully
White Sage is a plant of deep importance to several Native American traditions, particularly in the American Southwest. Using it outside that context is common today, but worth doing thoughtfully — choose ethically sourced sage over wild-harvested, and treat the burn as a small act of attention rather than a trendy accessory.
Scent and How It Works
The smoke is herbal and slightly bitter, lighter than incense sticks and more grounding than floral blends. Many people use White Sage to clear a room before meditation, after a stressful day, or when moving into a new space. The smouldering bundle is held away from soft furnishings and walked slowly around the area you want to clear.
How to Use
Light one end of the bundle and let the flame catch the dry leaves for 10–20 seconds, then blow the flame out so the leaves smoulder. Carry the bundle over a heatproof tray, abalone shell or stone dish to catch embers. When you are done, press the burning end gently against the dish to extinguish — do not stub it out with your fingers. Store the stick dry between uses.
Frequently Asked
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where is the sage grown? | Our White Sage is ethically harvested in Oregon, United States. Ethical sourcing matters because wild Salvia apiana populations have been under pressure from over-harvesting. |
| How long does one stick last? | Each smudge stick can be relit many times — a single short burn (30–60 seconds) is usually enough for a room. Stored dry, one stick lasts for many sessions. |
| Do I need a tray? | Yes — always burn on a heatproof tray, abalone shell or stone dish. Embers can drop while the bundle smoulders. |
| Can I combine it with Palo Santo? | A common ritual is sage first to clear, Palo Santo afterwards to settle the space with a warmer scent. Each plays a different role. |
