Details

Sinicuichi extract 10x is a concentrated ethnobotanical preparation from the leaves of Heimia salicifolia. One of the distinctive plants in the ethnobotanical heritage of Mexico and Central America, sinicuichi is known by its Nahuatl name meaning "sun opener" and was used in Aztec ritual and folk medicine for its traditional role in fermented ceremonial beverages. Each 2 g package is hermetically sealed.

About sinicuichi (Heimia salicifolia)

Heimia salicifolia belongs to the family Lythraceae (loosestrife family), the same family as henna (Lawsonia inermis). It is a shrub or small tree growing up to 3 m in height, with willow-like (salicifolia = willow-leaved) narrow leaves and small yellow flowers. The plant is native to Mexico and ranges through Central America and into South America as far as Argentina. It grows in disturbed habitats, along roadsides, and in moist, semi-open environments across its native range.

Traditional and cultural use

In Aztec tradition, Heimia salicifolia was known as sinicuichi or sinichichi and regarded as a sacred plant associated with the sun. The traditional preparation method was fermentation: fresh leaves were soaked in water and left in the sun to ferment, producing a mildly intoxicating drink consumed during ceremonial occasions. The fermented beverage was traditionally used by Aztec priests and healers in ritual contexts. Ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes documented its traditional use in Mexico in the mid-20th century, noting that indigenous communities consumed the fermented preparation and described characteristic auditory effects — distorted and distant sound perception — which contributed to the plant's reputation as an "auditory hallucinogen" in ethnobotanical literature, though this framing is descriptive of reported traditional experience rather than a confirmed pharmacological claim.

Active compounds

  • Cryogenine (vertine) — a quinolizidine alkaloid considered the primary constituent
  • Lythrine, nesodine, sinine, and lyfoline — related quinolizidine alkaloids
  • Flavonoids including quercetin derivatives
  • Tannins and phenolic acids

Extraction and potency

A 10x ratio indicates that 10 g of dried sinicuichi leaf has been concentrated into 1 g of extract. Water and ethanol extraction captures the full range of soluble alkaloids and flavonoids, which are then dried and milled to a consistent powder. This provides greater botanical concentration per gram than raw or dried leaf.

How to use

As a traditional-style tea:

  • Dissolve a maximum of 0.5–1 g of extract in 300–500 ml of warm or room-temperature water.
  • Stir well and allow to steep for 10–15 minutes before consuming slowly.
  • Add honey to taste if desired.

In keeping with the traditional preparation, the dissolved extract can also be left covered in a warm location for several hours before consuming, though this is not required for the extract form. Begin with the lower dosage end.
