Skullcap Scutellaria Galericulata - Herbs of the Gods
Availability: In stock In stock
The common Skullcap comes from the Scutellaria family, meaning it is a type of mint. The skullcap owes its name to the shape of the blossom, which resembles the human skull. Galericulata in Latin means “hooded”, therefore its name. Sometimes the plant is also referred to as ‘mad dog weed’. The Scutellaria grows on water sides and in swamps.
This Common Skullcap should not be confused with its family types of Skullcaps, like the Marsh Skullcap or the Hooded Skullcap. They have quite different medical uses and effects. There are over 200 different types which are similar, but slightly different. As you can read on Wikipedia: “Blue skullcap (S. lateriflora) is accepted as the "skullcap" used in traditional North American medicine, however common skullcap shares many of the same active chemicals and is used as a substitute in Britain and Europe. Common skullcap (S. galericulata) is also often used in the same way as Western skullcap (S. canescens) and Southern skullcap (S. cordifolia), all of which are genetically similar.” [link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutellaria_galericulata]
The flowers of the skullcap are traditionally used by Native Americans because of its sedative properties. The plant gives you a comfortable and relaxed feeling. It helps to reduce feelings of fear, stress, restlessness and anxiety. It can help you to have a good nice rest or to prepare for meditation. Sometimes it also gives you a light high!
