This 80 gram pack contains the shredded, dried aerial parts of Passiflora incarnata, also known as maypop or purple passionflower. The plant is part of the Passifloraceae family and has been cultivated and used as a traditional herbal preparation in the Americas and Europe for centuries.
About Passiflora incarnata
Passiflora incarnata is a perennial climbing vine native to the southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America and parts of South America. It produces striking flowers with an intricate corona of filaments and bears edible orange-yellow fruit, known as maypops. The plant has been part of Native American botanical traditions and was later introduced to European herbalism in the seventeenth century. It is one of more than five hundred Passiflora species and one of the few that naturally contains the harmala alkaloids harmine and harmaline.
Active compounds
The aerial parts of Passiflora incarnata naturally contain a range of compounds, including:
- Harmala alkaloids — harmine, harmaline, harmalol (in small amounts)
- Flavonoids — vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, isoorientin, chrysin
- Maltol
- Cyanogenic glycosides (trace amounts)
- Essential oils
How it is traditionally prepared
The dried shredded herb is traditionally prepared as a tea or infusion:
- Add 2 grams of shredded passionflower to 150 ml of freshly boiled water.
- Let it steep for 30 minutes.
- Strain, then sweeten with honey or sugar to taste if desired.
Higher amounts (around 15 grams) have been used historically by people who wished to make use of the harmala alkaloid content. The harmala alkaloids in Passiflora act as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOi). This is a pharmacological fact, not a recommendation: MAOi activity has significant interactions with foods, beverages and medications, and combining it with other compounds is associated with serious health risks.
Important MAOi information
Because Passiflora incarnata naturally contains MAOi-active alkaloids, certain foods, drinks and medications should be avoided during use. Tyramine-rich foods (aged cheese, cured meat, fermented soy, broad beans, certain wines and beers), most antidepressants (SSRI, SNRI, MAOI, tricyclics), stimulants and sympathomimetic medications can all interact dangerously. A widely cited reference list of foods and substances to avoid is published by Erowid. If you take any prescription medication or have a medical condition, do not combine this herb with anything without consulting a qualified healthcare professional first.

I have had it in the tea and also smoked it.Rating
It does have mild but noticeable effects.
I had a quite strong tea after taking mushrooms.
I believe it did enhance the journey.
It was quite mind-blowing.

I cant stress enough how valuable a commodity these beautiful passion fruit herbs have become to me!Rating
They give such a warm delicious taste and blend well with any other tea Ive tried with it. I strongly recommend to give passion flower a try! I usually use about one to two tablespoons to mix in with 2 to 5 other herbs. (such as Gingko, Damiana, Catmint, Jiaogulan, Marshmallow)
Awesome quality! Cheers! (Posted on 9/29/2023) - Psciloflora trip (Passiflora+Truffles) Review by Cobbler

13.40 I added about 15g to 500ml bolied water.Rating
14.15 I poured it out through filter. I halved it.
14.50 My friend arrived, we drank it.
15.25 We both ate a full package of Drangon's Dynamite.
15.50 It hit already!
It became a powerful trip with extreme visuals. Peak started after 2 hours, lasted about 3-4 hours. During the peak we laid down on the floor in my bedroom with led lights changing colors. We looked up a "Good vibes" trip playist.
We found ourselves, our inner god and found meanings of universe and life - my favorite part of trips. Expanded mind, sharp hearing, beautiful colors.
The whole trip lasted about 8 hours. It was still too short. Awesome experience, my best trip ever (it was my 7th truffle trip, 1st one with MAOi).
I can recommend combining truffles with MAOis (and Passiflora is still a weak one, I'll try some stronger stuff for sure).
Using MAOis require some knowledge on it and you have to plan your trip more carefully!
Always keep yourself to your tyramine diet and be clear which substances you shouldn't combine with MAOis!
You will find many information on this site, too. It helped me a lot.
Thank you! (Posted on 3/11/2021)
