How to use a mushroom spore syringe ?

Posted under: How to's, Our products

Spore syringes are a commonly used medium that contain spores from any kind of magic mushroom strain. One syringe contains millions of quality mushroom spores, floating in a sterile solution. A mushroom spore syringe is easy to use and store. Let's take a look how to use a magic mushroom spore syringe.

The mushroom spore syringe is used to inoculate substrate, a nutritious grow environment, with a mushroom strain of choice. Whether you choose to grow Oyster mushrooms, magic mushrooms, or a medicinal strain, a spore syringe is used to start the cultivating process.

Spore Syringe Instructions: How to Use a Mushroom Spore Syringe?

First, make sure that your working area is clean. Disinfect your hands or use sterile gloves before you prepare your mushroom spore syringe.

The pre-made spore syringes are ready to use. When the spore syringe is stored in the refrigerator, it is best to take it out 12 hours before use.

Our mushroom spore syringe comes in a pack that includes:

  • 1x  spore solution in a 20ml syringe
  • 1x sterile needle
  • 4x Alco preps

The syringe is sealed with a cap, called luer lock. Take the spore syringe with the cap still on it. Hold the syringe with the cap pointing up. Unscrew the cap from the spore syringe by turning it counterclockwise.

Remove the needle from its sterile package (leave the protection cap on the needle) and attach it to the spore syringe. Before use, shake the spore syringe for a few seconds. The spore syringe is now ready for further use, like microscopic research or ready to inoculate a sterile substrate.

Microscopic Use of Mushroom Spores

Get a microscope slide and clean it properly. Shake the spore syringe and add one drop of spore solution onto the microscope slide. Take a cover glass and put this on the drop of spores. The slide is now ready for research. Have a look at the shape, size, and color of the spores and what kind you have.

The Inoculation of Substrate with Spore Syringe

If you want to reproduce spores, it will be needed to fruit some mushrooms from the chosen mushroom spores. This can be done by inoculating a substrate, soil with nutritions specially developed for growing mushrooms. Edible, medicinal, or psilocybe mushroom strains need different substrates to grow on.

With the mushroom spores syringe, you will only need to drop 3 milliliters of spore solution to colonize 1 liter or 1.05 quarts of substrate. A syringe contains 20 ml of spore solution, enough to inoculate 6-7 liters of substrate. Just drop a few milliliters in every corner of the mushroom substrate, and you are ready to go.

However to ensure growth add some extra drops of spore or use a Liquid Culture vial to develop mycelium from the spores before inoculation.

After a few days, white patches of mycelium will start growing on the places where the spores were dropped. Wait until the whole substrate is colonized by the mushroom mycelium before you start the fruiting process. When the mushrooms (fruits of the mycelium) start to grow and mature, they can be picked, and their spores can be harvested for preservation. Make a spore print from the tallest and fattest mushroom, and you will have a good specimen for further research.

How to Store Mushroom Spore Syringe

Proper storage of these spore syringes is essential to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the spores. In this article, we will discuss how to store mushroom spore syringe to ensure their longevity and effectiveness.

Temperature Requirements

The ideal temperature for storing mushroom spore syringes is between 2C-8C Celsius or 35F-46F Fahrenheit. It is essential to keep the syringes within this temperature range to avoid damaging the spores or rendering them ineffective. It is not recommended to store spore syringes at room temperature or higher temperatures, as this can lead to the spores losing their viability.

Syringe Care

After each use, it is important to reattach the luer lock to the syringe. This will help prevent contamination and keep the spore solution sterile. Failure to reattach the luer lock can cause the spore solution to dry out or become contaminated.

Shelf Life

It is recommended to use the spore syringe within 12 months after purchase. Over time, the spores' viability can decrease, making them less effective at colonizing the substrate. To ensure the highest success rate possible, it is best to use spore syringes as soon as possible after purchase.

Work Clean

It's worth mentioning that cultivating mushrooms is a process that demands precise attention to detail and sanitation to minimize contamination risks. To ensure the success of your mushroom cultivation project, it's recommended that you do further research and practice sterile techniques. You might consider using a laminar flow hood or working in a glovebox to reduce the likelihood of contamination.

A simple process

In summary, using a spore syringe for P. cubensis mushrooms is a simple process that can assist you in growing your own mushrooms. With the correct materials, techniques, and careful attention, you can successfully cultivate these intriguing fungi in your own home. However, it's essential to remember the importance of maintaining a clean environment to maximize your chances of success.
