Posted under: Our products

Syrian rue is a common name given to the Peganum harmala, a plant with a white flower native from a land between Iran and India. Syrian rue is not the only nickname to Peganum harmala. It's also called Wild rue, African rue, harmel, aspand, esfand...

A lots of names for a tiny plant, don't you think?  Why are the reason of all this nicknames? Well, maybe it's because this tiny plant has received a lot of attention through history. The seeds of the Syrian rue have been used in rituals, medicine practice and magic beverages for a lot of centuries and by different cultures: the persians used for religious practices, the turkish people used it to protect houses against evil forces, the arabs used it as a short of "magic snack". Christians also used it in some rituals.

What are the active compounds of Syrian rue?

The Syrian rue is a natural MAOi (beta-carboline). What the hell is MAOi? It's the acronym of Monoamine oxidase inhibitor.

Oh, I think I just complicated it a little more...

syrian rueThe Monoamine oxidase are a family of enzimes. Its physiological mission is to oxidate -to destroy, so to speak- other well-known substances of our body: the neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters are substances that our neurons use to connect with other neurons. One neuron secrets neurotransmitters to transfer the electric impulse to the next neuron. Then, the Monoamine oxidase cleans the neurotransmitter in order to keep a balance between neurons.

This active compound of the Syrian rue destroys part of this Monoamine oxidase (MAO). The result is rupture of the normal balance of the body.

The Syrian rue also contais alkaloids. Alkaloids are natural chemical compounds generated by vegetal species in order to protect themselves from parasites or animals attacks. Alkaloids often give to its producer a bitter taste (that's why Syrian rue has a bad taste). Alkaloids have pharmacological effects that are used for medical drugs and recreational drugs. Alkaloids are present in our day by day. For example: If you are a coffee drinker or a smoker, you are taking alkaloids every day. Cocaine, our dear psilocin and morphine also contains alkaloids.
